{"id":25039,"date":"2016-07-06T21:52:29","date_gmt":"2016-07-07T04:52:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=25039"},"modified":"2016-07-06T21:52:29","modified_gmt":"2016-07-07T04:52:29","slug":"man-helped-identity-theft-ring-technical-support-sentenced-prison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=25039","title":{"rendered":"Man Who Helped an Identity Theft Ring with &#8220;Technical Support&#8221; Sentenced to Prison"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>LOS ANGELES<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A man who formerly resided in Glendale has been sentenced to more than 12 years in federal prison for his role of providing \u201ctechnical support\u201d to a credit card fraud ring that caused an estimated loss of more than $3 million during his involvement and for applying for a phony passport to flee prosecution, according to officials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14523 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Courtroom-300x160.jpg\" alt=\"Courtroom\" width=\"300\" height=\"160\" \/>U.S. District Judge Percy Anderson sentenced Mario Humberto Monge, 52, who was already in custody to more than 12 years \u00a0in prison. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The judge ordered him to pay more than $358,000 in restitution. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Judge Anderson said there was a high likelihood this defendant would reoffend because he was previously convicted of virtually the same conduct and that society needed to be protected from him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cSophisticated identity theft rings like the one involved here could not function without technical skills,\u201d said U.S. Attorney Eileen M. Decker. \u201cMr. Monge\u2019s use of his electrical engineering knowledge to maintain the skimmers and other technology used by this ring enabled an estimated $3 million in losses suffered by approximately 44 victim financial institutions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">According to the documents in the case, other members of the identity theft ring led authorities to Monge\u2019s Glendale residence. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In February of 2015, law enforcement executed search warrants at several locations related to the ring, including Monge\u2019s residence, according to officials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">At that time, authorities seized a large amount of cash, currency counting machine, gas pump skimmer, skimmer electronic parts, a gas pump lock and key, and approximately 428 confirmed re-encoded credit\/debit cards. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">At the time, Monge stated to authorities that his role was to provide \u201ctechnical support\/repairman\u201d to the fraud ring because of his engineering background.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">After authorities searched his residence, officials said Monge applied for passports in false names as part of a plan to flee the country. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Authorities searched his residence again in June of 2015 and seized additional identity theft related evidence, including an additional 33 re-encoded credit\/debit cards, according to officials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cTask force members investigating this case worked from the bottom up to determine the extent of the criminal organization and to uncover how and with whom it functioned as it victimized dozens of institutions,\u201d said Deirdre Fike, the Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI\u2019s Los Angeles Field Office. \u201cI hope this lengthy sentence for Mr. Monge, a repeat offender, serves as a warning to those conducting similar criminal activity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">When imposing sentence the judge considered Monge\u2019s criminal history, which included prior federal convictions for fraud involving cloned cellphone devices and possession of firearm silencers without serial numbers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Judge Anderson also said that Monge\u2019s applying for passports in false names while on bond showed a lack of respect for the law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A man who formerly resided in Glendale has been sentenced to more than 12 years in federal prison for his role of providing \u201ctechnical support\u201d to a credit card fraud ring that caused an estimated loss of more than $3 million during his involvement and for applying for a phony passport to flee prosecution, according to officials.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":16417,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[16,3],"tags":[473,362,2835],"class_list":["post-25039","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-home-main-slider","category-u-s-department-of-justice","tag-fraud","tag-identity-theft","tag-technical-support"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.6 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Man Who Helped an Identity Theft Ring with &quot;Technical Support&quot;
