Bernie Sanders.<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page-pad mod\">\n<div class=\"article__copy article__stock\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21181 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Trump-Make-America-Great-Again-237x300.jpg\" alt=\"Trump Make America Great Again\" width=\"237\" height=\"300\" \/>The report, from Harvard Kennedy School\u2019s Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy, underscores the role that the press can play in anointing \u2014\u00a0or sinking \u2014\u00a0a candidate, as well as keeping voters under-informed by focusing\u00a0only on the horse race instead of the candidates or relevant issues.<\/p>\n<p>It also highlights how the press helped to elevate Trump while contributing to the downfall of rival candidates, and paid relatively little attention to the Democratic nominating contest.<\/p>\n<p>For the report, a content analysis firm, Media Tenor, examined statements from\u00a0CBS, Fox, the <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>, NBC,<em>The New York Times<\/em>, <em>USA Today<\/em>, <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em>, and <em>The Washington Post<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGame-centered reporting has consequences,\u201d the report said. \u201cThe media\u2019s tendency to allocate coverage based on winning and losing affects voters\u2019 decisions. The press\u2019s attention to early winners, and its tendency to afford them more positive coverage than their competitors, is not designed to boost their chances, but that\u2019s a predictable effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Why the Bias?<\/h2>\n<p>The press doesn\u2019t favor certain candidates because it\u2019s engaged in a vast conspiracy, according to the report. It\u2019s a lot simpler: reporters like a good story. It\u2019s what their business is based on. And this year, Trump\u2019s narrative seemed more novel than that of Clinton or Sanders.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24538\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24538\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-24538 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/o-BERNIE-SANDERS-facebook-300x150.jpg\" alt=\"Democratic presidential candidate, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first time the press has fallen for a candidate. Barack Obama received \u201coutsized coverage\u201d when he first ran in 2008, as did Sen. John McCain in 2000, when he invited reporters aboard his campaign bus, the \u201cStraight Talk Express.\u201d Trump, the report said, is now on that list.<\/p>\n<p>The press\u2019s extensive focus on the horse race\u00a0also leaves less time for\u00a0substantive coverage, the report said. It\u00a0found that mainstream media primary coverage was almost entirely about the competition or\u00a0the campaign process.<\/p>\n<p>By comparison,\u00a0only 11 percent of the primary coverage focused on the candidates\u2019 policy positions, leadership abilities or personal and professional histories. \u201cSubstantive concerns got the least amount of attention,\u201d the report found \u2014\u00a0on both sides of the aisle.<\/p>\n<h2>Trump\u2019s \u201cPress Advantage\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Even before the primaries began, Trump dominated media coverage. For the bulk of the campaign, Trump has received more press attention than any other candidate from either major party, the report found.<\/p>\n<p>As he continued to win primaries, his story became about gaining momentum, a narrative that held fast. \u201cVictory for Trump was also his path to positive coverage,\u201d the report said.\u00a0Sen. Marco Rubio, by contrast, was portrayed as consistently losing ground after he failed to win an early contest. Rubio never had, the report said, \u201ca single week where his positive press outpaced his negative press.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"article--pullquote\">\n<section class=\"quote\">\n<h3 class=\"quote__highlight\">11%<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"quote__quote\">Only 11 percent of coverage focused on candidates\u2019 policy positions, leadership abilities or personal and professional histories.\u00a0&#8212; Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy<\/h3>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<p>Trump did receive more substantive coverage in the final month of the campaign, when there were no other competitors in the Republican race, the report said. References to his character and policies rose from 10 percent to 19 percent, and the tone was overwhelmingly negative.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the\u00a0report attributed Trump\u2019s candidacy in part to the coverage. \u201cHe might have won the Republican nomination in any case, given the confluence of factors working in his favor,\u201d it said. \u201cBut one of his assets, certainly, was his press advantage.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Clinton and Sanders, Overshadowed\u00a0by Republican Race<\/h2>\n<p>On the Democratic side, the candidates generally received coverage on par with their primary results: Clinton received 54 percent of the press attention, versus Sanders\u2019 46 percent, until the middle stage of the campaign \u2014 mid-March to early May<strong> \u2014<\/strong>\u00a0when Clinton pulled ahead.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15698 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/HILLARY-CLINTON-e1442607667914-300x256.jpg\" alt=\"Hillary Rodham Clinton Signs Copies Of Her Book 'Hard Choices' In New York\" width=\"300\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/HILLARY-CLINTON-e1442607667914-300x256.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/HILLARY-CLINTON-e1442607667914-1024x872.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/HILLARY-CLINTON-e1442607667914.jpg 1728w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Sanders also received more positive media attention \u2014\u00a0the largest favorable margin of any candidate, 59 percent good press to 41 percent bad press \u2014\u00a0until the middle stage of the campaign, the report found.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, reports on Clinton were more critical because as the presumptive nominee, she was expected by the press to dominate the early contests. By the middle stage of the campaign, however, Clinton was eking out more favorable press, 51 percent positive to 49 percent negative.<\/p>\n<p>But once she clinched the nomination, she received\u00a0more criticism, with 49 percent positive statements to 51 percent negative, in part because Trump began to target her in speeches.<\/p>\n<p>But no matter what the Democratic candidates did, the Republican contest continued to dominate the press coverage, even when Trump became the presumptive nominee. \u201cAlthough Trump no longer had active opposition, he received more news coverage in the last month than did either Clinton or Sanders,\u201d the report said, \u201ca development that has no possible explanation other than journalistic bias.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/article>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An analysis of news coverage from the 2016 primary races found that mainstream media outlets engaged in \u201cjournalistic bias\u201d that led to over-coverage of the Donald Trump campaign and under-coverage of Democratic candidates, in particular Sen.
