\"courtroom_02\"\u00a0<\/strong>A federal judge sentenced a former special agent with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement\u2019s \u00a0Homeland Security Investigations Tuesday to 10 months in federal prison for accepting thousands of dollars in bribes from a Korean businessman, according to U.S. Department of Justice.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Joohoon David Lee, 43, who currently resides in Las Vegas, Nevada, was sentenced by <\/span><\/p>\n

U.S. District Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald, who called the bribery \u201ca very, very grave crime,\u201d sentenced 43-year-old, Las Vegas resident Joohoon David Lee.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u201cThis defendant sold his position of authority as a law enforcement officer for a few thousand dollars,\u201d said United States Attorney Eileen M. Decker. \u201cAs a consequence of this abuse of trust, he will now pay a far more significant price. This defendant\u2019s crime, however, should not cast a shadow over the tens of thousands of law enforcement officers across the country who are carrying out their duties with honor and dedication.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Lee accepted bribe money from a Korean man identified in court documents at \u201cH.S.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

According to court documents, Lee, who was assigned to Homeland Security’s Human Trafficking unit in Los Angeles, interviewed a woman in March 2012 who claimed that she was entering the United States to be a sex slave for H.S.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 About a year later, according to court filings, Lee met with an attorney representing H.S. and told the lawyer that Lee could fly to Korea, interview H.S. and submit a favorable report \u2013 if H.S. would finance the trip.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cThereafter, H.S.\u2019s family arranged to have a relative, who was living in Southern California, travel to Las Vegas, where, by this time, defendant Lee had been transferred, and hand defendant Lee $3,000 in cash,\u201d according to a sentencing memo filed by prosecutors that notes Lee purchased a plane ticket to Seoul, Korea the following day.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Lee travelled to Seoul, where H.S. paid for Lee\u2019s hotel and entertainment expenses. <\/span><\/p>\n

While in Korea, \u201cLee asked [H.S.] for $100,000 to make HS\u2019s immigration issues go away,\u201d according to the sentencing memo. H.S. ultimately paid Lee between $6,000 and $7,000 in cash.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Upon returning to the United States, Lee prepared a report related to the investigation of H.S. that read: \u201cSubject was suspected of human trafficking. No evidence found and victim statement contradicts. Case closed. No further action required.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The case against Lee was investigated by ICE\u2019s Office of Professional Responsibility.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cThose who work in law enforcement are supposed to uphold our nation\u2019s laws, not willingly break them,\u201d said Jeffrey Gilgallon, assistant special agent in charge for ICE\u2019s Office of Professional Responsibility in Los Angeles. \u201cAs this case shows, ICE has zero tolerance for public officials who abuse their authority and violate the public\u2019s trust to feed their own greed. Guarding against illegal or unethical behavior is not an option; it\u2019s an obligation we have to the people we serve.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
