{"id":26170,"date":"2016-08-23T18:00:42","date_gmt":"2016-08-24T01:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=26170"},"modified":"2016-08-23T18:00:42","modified_gmt":"2016-08-24T01:00:42","slug":"feds-file-discrimination-lawsuit-against-mortgage-loan-modification-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=26170","title":{"rendered":"Feds File Discrimination Lawsuit Against Mortgage Loan Modification Services"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>CALIFORNIA<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The Justice Department Tuesday filed a lawsuit alleging that several mortgage loan modification services discriminated against <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8558 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/courtroom_02.jpg\" alt=\"courtroom_02\" width=\"250\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/courtroom_02.jpg 250w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/courtroom_02-45x35.jpg 45w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>Hispanic homeowners by making them pay for unnecessary loan audits, which cost $5,000, and encouraging them to default on mortgage payments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">This resulted in many losing their homes, according to officials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIntentionally targeting any community or person with predatory mortgage services because of their ethnicity or national origin violates federal law, harms working families and hurts our entire economy,\u201d said Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta, head of the Justice Department\u2019s Civil Rights Division. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Adding,\u201cThe defendants in this case tried to exploit Hispanic communities and homeowners already suffering from abusive, discriminatory financial practices during the Great Recession that drove the American housing market into crisis and our economy into freefall. The Justice Department\u2019s lawsuit serves as a stark reminder and sends a clear message that we will work tirelessly to ensure that all homeowners can access mortgage services free from discrimination.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The defendants named in the lawsuit filed in California are The Home Loan Auditors LLC, Century Law Center LLC, SOE Assistance Center Inc., Spieker Law Office and the principals of these entities: Omar Alcaraz, Araceli Castro, Oralia Gutierrez, Hortencia Leon, Raul Luna, Elena Ramirez and David Spieker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">This lawsuit arose as a result of complaints filed with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
