It touched off protests and resulted in business groups canceling conventions and musical performers refusing to play in that state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The &#8220;show your papers&#8221; immigration law gave the state&#8217;s public image a black-eye along with the image of a former female governor gleefully signing it into law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The Las Vegas Journal Review newspaper reported last week that Arizona officials finally decided to scrap most of the law, ending a costly battle between state and civil rights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Opponents allege that the law, commonly\u00a0known as SB 1070 and\u00a0signed by then Gov. Jan Brewer, led to racial profiling and wrongful detention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Under the new agreement, local authorities have limited power to enforce federal immigration laws. \u00a0Also it banned\u00a0immigration-only arrests. Also the settlement says law enforcement officers cannot prolong traffic stops to check the immigration status of drivers and passengers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The Obama administration challenged the law, saying the federal government had jurisdiction over immigration enforcement. The U.S. Supreme Court in 2012 partially struck down the law, including a provision requiring immigrants to carry paperwork at all times.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26656\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26656\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26656 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Jan-brewer--300x252.jpg\" alt=\"FILE - In this Jan. 25, 2012, file photo, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer and President Obama in January 2015.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But the high court upheld the law\u2019s most controversial section, which required police officers to check the immigration status of people they stop, even for minor offenses, the so-called \u2018show your papers\u2019 provision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Arizona, which was one of the last two states to reluctantly approve holiday for Martin Luther King Jr., is where I stop long enough to fill up my gas tank to drive to the other side. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A state with a county that keeps re-electing an ignorant bigot, Sheriff Joe Arpaio, \u00a0and a governor who shakes her finger at a U.S. president isn&#8217;t worth my time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Arpaio, however, was finally held in contempt of court by a federal judge in Phoenix who was apparently tired of him thumbing his nose at federal court orders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">To read those details click here: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/news\/archive\/2016\/08\/joe-arpaio-criminal-contempt\/496778\/\">\u00a0<strong>&#8220;Joe Arpaio&#8217;s Contempt of Court&#8221; by the Atlantic.<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Here is why Arpaio who endorsed Trump is a despicable human being with a badge: <a href=\"https:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/doj-uncovers-rampant-lawbreaking-by-sheriff-joe-arpaio-despite-his-stonewalling-fce544368cff#.e8yijpxok\"><strong>DOJ Uncovers Rampant Lawbreaking By Sheriff Joe Arpaio Despite His Stonewalling<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Most in states like Arizona who pass these immigration or Voter ID restrictions aren&#8217;t moved by facts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But here are a rew recent facts about immigration by the Pew Research Center: \u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2016\/08\/31\/u-s-immigrant-deportations-declined-in-2014-but-remain-near-record-high\/\">U.S. immigrant deportations declined in 2014, but remain near record high<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2016\/02\/03\/homeland-security-produces-first-estimate-of-foreign-visitors-to-u-s-who-overstay-deadline-to-leave\/ft_16-02-01_overstay_map\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment-large size-large alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/files\/2016\/02\/FT_16.02.01_overstay_map.png\" alt=\"Foreign visitor overstays by birth region\" width=\"420\" height=\"414\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The number of Mexican and Canadian people crossing the border is in the millions: \u00a0&#8220;Around 300,000 people cross the northern border with Canada each day, which equates to annual approximates of 39,254,000 crossings by Canadians into the United States (in 2009) and 20,213,500 crossings by Americans into Canada (in 2010),&#8221; according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reference.com\/government-politics\/many-people-cross-united-states-borders-year-742f7a2de64114dc#\">Reference.com.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The southern border with Mexico was crossed by more than 20 million Americans in 2013 and over 14 million Mexican tourists coming the other way, according to Reference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Having lived on the border for much of my life, most Hispanics understand and there is no doubt that there is need for strong immigration laws and enforcement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But using the U.S. Constitution as a doormat and mentally and physically brutalizing honest and hardworking people isn&#8217;t unacceptable.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>The Headlines Read: ISIS Leader Dead, Killed by Drone<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The infamous Dr. Wa&#8217;il who oversaw ISIS&#8217; production of gruesome propaganda videos was nailed by a drone. Needless to say, he is with his 72 virgins in paradise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I&#8217;d like to think that he was sitting inside a Toyota pickup truck filling out a voter registration application so he&#8217;d be able to cast an absentee ballot for the Ayatollah Trump when the drone spoiled his day.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Huffington Post Headlines: \u00a0National Police Union Endorses Donald Trump<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong> The self-described \u201claw-and-order candidate\u201d gets official backing from law enforcement.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">National Police Union is endorsing a bigot. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-26657 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/National-Police-Union-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"national-police-union\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/National-Police-Union-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/National-Police-Union-768x548.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/National-Police-Union-1024x731.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/National-Police-Union.jpg 1180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>This is the grand daddy of police unions, which collectively have never<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0criticized one police brutal beating of a suspect or fatal shooting of an unarmed person, even when the unarmed victim was running away or was selling single-cigarettes in front of a store before he was choked to death, according to published reports.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The National Union has 250,000 members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">What solutions has the union offered to lower the number citizen complaints against police by citizens? What solutions have they offered to lower the<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0number of incidents of police brutality or decrease the number of fatal shootings?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">This year, so far, 772 people have been fatally shot by police, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/ng-interactive\/2015\/jun\/01\/the-counted-police-killings-us-database\"><strong>according to the Guardian newspaper<\/strong>, <\/a>which keeps a daily track of these incidents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The Police Union would argue Trump is their guy because he is a &#8220;law and order&#8221; guy who represents their interests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">They aren&#8217;t racists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> They just support a racist&#8217;s &#8220;law and order&#8221; message. One that many see as an election-year, conservative code word for giving cops the green light to brutalize communities; reignite so-called stop-and-frisk policing and fire first and ask questions later etc&#8230;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But people shouldn&#8217;t raise concerns because cops are sworn to protect and serve. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15269 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Ferguson-Protest-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Ferguson Protest\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Ferguson-Protest-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Ferguson-Protest-90x60.jpg 90w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Ferguson-Protest-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Ferguson-Protest-95x64.jpg 95w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Ferguson-Protest.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Yet, I can&#8217;t help but wonder whether the police officer who comes to my door after I call 911 will &#8220;protect and serve&#8221; or believe some aren&#8217;t really worthy of the same protection and service under the constitution. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Or, as a juror, wonder whether the cop testifying in court is a bigot or maybe, one of the best police officers on the force.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I wonder whether President Trump will appoint a U.S. Attorney General who will conduct civil rights investigations of fatal shootings of unarmed people by cops?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Will a Trump Department of Justice continue investigating police departments who have histories and patterns of corruption, racism, brutality or are piling up questionable fatal shootings? Cities like Ferguson, Chicago, Cleveland, \u00a0Baltimore, New York City, Los Angeles, Albuquerque etc&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The latest DOJ report on Baltimore found police routinely violated the constitutional rights of residents by conducting unlawful stops and using excessive force, according to the findings of a long-anticipated Justice Department probe released in August.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14118 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Police-Protect-and-Serve-217x300.jpg\" alt=\"Police Protect and Serve\" width=\"217\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Police-Protect-and-Serve-217x300.jpg 217w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Police-Protect-and-Serve.jpg 310w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/>The practices overwhelmingly affected the city&#8217;s black residents in low-income neighborhoods, according to the 163-page report. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Under a Trump Department of Justice, will cops be emboldened to take the law into their owns hands and act as judges, jurors and executioners?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Will this trigger outrage and demands for justice into the streets after anger and frustration fall on deaf ears? Will street protests turn into riots, burning and looting? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Will it become more dangerous for a cop on the beat?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">What does the National Police Union&#8217;s endorsement of a bigot mean? \u00a0It speaks volumes about thousands who are on the streets with guns and badges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Volumes, especially to millions of people of color.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It has cost Arizona millions of dollars in legal fees.
