Scalise wrote in an email to Harvard student athletes that he decided to cancel the rest of the team\u2019s season because the \u201cpractice appears to be more widespread across the team and has continued beyond 2012, including in 2016.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cAs a direct result of what Harvard Athletics has learned, we have decided to cancel the remainder of the 2016 men\u2019s soccer season,\u201d Scalise wrote. \u201cThe team will forfeit its remaining games and will decline any opportunity to achieve an Ivy League championship or to participate in the NCAA Tournament this year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Last week, The Crimson <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2016\/10\/25\/harvard-mens-soccer-2012-report\/\">reported<\/a> that the 2012 men\u2019s soccer team created a \u201cscouting report\u201d of that year\u2019s women\u2019s soccer recruits, rating them numerically and assigning each a hypothetical sexual position. University President Drew G. Faust instructed OGC, Harvard\u2019s team of lawyers, to \u201creview\u201d the matter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cAs I asked the OGC to undertake this, it had to be on a fairly short time frame because the season is proceeding apace,\u201d Faust said in an interview Thursday. \u201cI wanted a response that would be within the context of the team\u2019s responsibilities representing Harvard and this athletic season.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">According to both Scalise and a statement from University President Drew G. Faust, members of the soccer team were not initially forthcoming about their involvement in the \u201creports.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThe decision to cancel a season is serious and consequential, and reflects Harvard\u2019s view that both the team\u2019s behavior and the failure to be forthcoming when initially questioned are completely unacceptable, have no place at Harvard, and run counter to the mutual respect that is a core value of our community,\u201d Faust wrote in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Faust wrote she \u201cwas deeply distressed to learn that the appalling actions of the 2012 men\u2019s soccer team were not isolated to one year or the actions of a few individuals.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcodes-wrapper shortcodes-wrapper-left shortcodes-wrapper-large \">\n<div class=\"shortcodes-object\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a class=\"shortcodes-block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/image\/2016\/11\/4\/soccer-yale-2016\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Soccer vs. Yale\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/thumbnails.thecrimson.com\/photos\/2016\/11\/03\/200825_1318328.jpg.800x533_q95_crop-smart_upscale.jpg\" alt=\"Soccer vs. Yale\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcodes-description\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Harvard Men&#8217;s Soccer in action against Yale on October 1st 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcodes-byline\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/writer\/1212927\/Jazil__Waris\/\">JAZIL WARIS<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Faust also said Thursday that there have been preliminary discussions about whether or not this type of behavior takes place on other sports teams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI felt it was important to at least try to get some preliminary notion of are there people who know of other incidents, so the question has not been delved into deeply beyond the soccer team, but I have asked that it at least be raised as a question: is this wider spread?\u201d Faust said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Last week, when Scalise first saw the documents\u2014which were, until recently, publicly accessible through the 2012 team\u2019s Google Group\u2014he said he would immediately reach out to coaches of both men\u2019s and women\u2019s teams to discuss the report, but added that any response should be internal to Harvard and \u201cnot a media thing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The Office of Sexual Assault Prevention and Response will work to \u201cfurther educate\u201d the men\u2019s soccer team specifically and student-athletes generally, according to Scalise. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cHarvard Athletics has zero tolerance for this type of behavior,\u201d Scalise added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Men&#8217;s soccer coach Pieter S. Lehrer wrote in a statement that the team is &#8220;beyond disappointed that our season has ended in this way, but we respect the decision made by our administration.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In a statement Thursday evening, Dean of the College Rakesh Khurana wrote that he was \u201csaddened and disappointed to learn that the extremely offensive \u2018scouting report\u2019 produced by the 2012 men\u2019s soccer team continued through the current season.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">When The Crimson initially wrote on the lewd document from 2012, Khurana did not respond to multiple requests for an in-person interview to view the documents, instead writing in an emailed statement that he was \u201calways profoundly disturbed and upset by allegations of sexism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cAs I was not Dean of Harvard College in 2012 and do not have knowledge of this particular email, I cannot speak to the alleged conduct of these particular students,\u201d Khurana wrote at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The six 2012 women recruits written about in the \u201creport\u201d responded to The Crimson\u2019s initial story in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2016\/10\/29\/oped-soccer-report\/\">joint op-ed<\/a> earlier this week, condemning the \u201creport\u201d but ultimately forgiving the men\u2019s team for their actions. The op-ed drew praise from Scalise and many students over social media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWe are appalled that female athletes who are told to feel empowered and proud of their abilities are so regularly reduced to a physical appearance,\u201d they wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Had the men\u2019s soccer team competed and won in its game this Saturday against Columbia, it would have clinched an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u2014Staff writer Andrew M.
