The question isn\u2019t some roundabout attempt to use an opinion piece to promote or knock a particular faith. Rather, it spotlights a search of another kind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWhat is a Christian?\u201d grows out of an article this week by The Post\u2019s Julie Zauzmer, which described jubilation among some Christians over Donald Trump\u2019s victory \u2014 a win <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/acts-of-faith\/wp\/2016\/11\/15\/hopeful-and-relieved-evangelicals-see-trumps-win-as-their-own\/\" shape=\"rect\">supported by more than 80 percent of white evangelicals<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIt really makes you feel great to be a Christian,\u201d one person told The Post. \u201cI think Christians took a big stand this time and said we\u2019re going to stand up for our faith,\u201d said a second. Referring to Trump, a third said, \u201cI feel like we actually have an advocate now in the White House.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Those attitudes are reflected in a Pew Research Center <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2016\/11\/09\/how-the-faithful-voted-a-preliminary-2016-analysis\/\" shape=\"rect\">analysis of exit poll results<\/a>, which show that high numbers of white, born-again evangelical Christians, as well as a majority of Catholics, went for Trump.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">That notwithstanding, <a title=\"www.cnn.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/election\/results\/exit-polls\" shape=\"rect\">CNN exit polls<\/a> also showed that 59 percent of nonwhite evangelical Protestants, 45\u00a0percent of Catholics and 71 percent of Jewish voters backed Hillary Clinton.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Their embrace of Trump isn\u2019t, however, what prompts the \u201cWhat is a Christian?\u201d question.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It is raised because of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/donald-trump-a-declaration-by-american-evangelicals-concerning-donald-trump\" shape=\"rect\">A Declaration by American Evangelicals Concerning Donald Trump,\u201d<\/a> a statement posted on change.org that has been signed by more than 22,000 evangelical leaders and their supporters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">These are a collection of Christians of African and European descent, Latinos, Asian Americans and Native Americans representing a wide range of denominations and churches \u2014 and they hold a decidedly different view.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Trump, they declare, \u201cfueled white American nationalism with xenophobic appeals and religious intolerance at the expense of gospel values [and] democratic principles.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-23527 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/washingtonpost-300x217.png\" alt=\"washingtonpost\" width=\"300\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/washingtonpost.png 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/washingtonpost-278x202.png 278w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>They charge him with mocking women and the sanctity of marriage vows, disregarding facts, worshiping \u201cwealth and shameful materialism,\u201d and taking an already-weakened \u201cculture of civility to nearly unprecedented\u201d depths with his vulgarity and ugly personal attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"slug_inline_bb\" class=\"wp-inline-bb pb-centered-bb has-subscribe-promo\" data-google-query-id=\"CKaXkKTZs9ACFQZ4AQod2QMHDA\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">They describe Trump\u2019s campaign as the most \u201cextreme version of a history of racialized politics\u2019\u2019 that has ever been pursued, also noting with disdain the silence of white evangelicals in the face of such behavior. Their silence throughout that history, those Christian leaders declared, \u201cset the environment for what we see now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Hence the conundrum: A racially diverse community of evangelical Christian denominations and their supporters puts down Trump, beloved by a majority of white evangelical Christians, as \u201cmorally unacceptable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">What is a Christian? What does it mean to be one?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">These are haunting questions when tied to race.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. grappled with it more than 50 years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">King wrote in his famous 1963 \u201c<a title=\"kingencyclopedia.stanford.edu\" href=\"http:\/\/kingencyclopedia.stanford.edu\/encyclopedia\/documentsentry\/annotated_letter_from_birmingham\/\" shape=\"rect\">Letter From Birmingham Jail<\/a>\u201d that when he was \u201ccatapulted into the leadership of the bus protest in Montgomery, Ala.,\u201d he felt the white church would support him. Instead, he discovered some white ministers were outright opponents; others were \u201cmore cautious than courageous and .\u2009.\u2009. [they] remained silent behind the anesthetizing security of stained glass windows.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">King expressed disappointment at seeing white church leaders, in the midst of blatant racial and economic injustices, \u201cstand on the sideline and mouth pious irrelevancies and sanctimonious trivialities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">He spoke of traveling on \u201csweltering summer days and crisp autumn mornings\u201d and looking \u201cat the South\u2019s beautiful churches with their lofty spires pointing heavenward.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cOver and over I have found myself asking: \u2018What kind of people worship here? Who is their God?\u2019 \u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWhere were their voices,\u201d King asked, when the lips of their governors dripped with words of bigotry and hatred? \u201cWhere were their voices of support?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">They were silent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">King, first and foremost a Christian minister and son of a pastor, saw segregation as morally wrong and sinful. Why didn\u2019t his white co-religionists in the South see segregation statutes the same way?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In truth, some of the white Christians who professed belief in the authority of the Scriptures and the \u201cgood news\u201d of the gospel were the backbone of racial segregation. They elected and reelected to public office some of the country\u2019s most sexist, racist and religious bigots.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"slug_inline_bb_2\" class=\"wp-inline-bb pb-centered-bb has-subscribe-promo\" data-google-query-id=\"CKSVq6TZs9ACFY1vAQodtZwFzQ\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">So it was then.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"fiexMr1OL11W2q\" class=\"moat-trackable pb-f-theme-normal pb-2 pb-feature pb-layout-item pb-f-page-newsletter-inLine\" data-chain-name=\"no-name\" data-feature-name=\"no-name\" data-feature-id=\"page\/newsletter-inLine\">\n<div class=\"newsletter-inline-unit codedNewsletter\">\n<div class=\"signup-module row\">\n<div class=\"title-container col-xs-8\">\n<p class=\"headline\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">And now?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Since beginning my faith journey at age 12 several decades ago, I have been stumbling, slipping and falling short of the glory of God.
