Manzo is expected to start serving his sentence early next year.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Through Manzo and other witnesses, prosecutors are attempting to establish that Baca was personally aware of and involved in the events of the summer of 2011, when they allege the sheriff and his subordinates conspired to obstruct federal authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A lawyer for Baca told jurors this week that the evidence does not connect the former top lawman to any crimes committed by the rank-and-file deputies and pinned the blame on former Undersheriff <a id=\"PEGPF00112\" title=\"Paul Tanaka\" href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/topic\/crime-law-justice\/law-enforcement\/paul-tanaka-PEGPF00112-topic.html\">Paul Tanaka<\/a>, who has also been convicted in the case and sentenced to a five-year prison term.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Manzo recounted from the witness stand the steps he took after deputies found a cellphone on an inmate at Men\u2019s Central Jail, who they discovered was feeding information to the civil rights squad at\u00a0the FBI office in Los Angeles. Manzo testified that he was ordered by a lieutenant to interview the inmate and to record the conversation, so that the lieutenant could play the tape for \u201cthe executives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWho did you understand \u2018the executives\u2019 to mean?\u201d Assistant U.S. Atty. The sheriff ordered that the inmate was to be \u201cisolated and protected\u201d and that the group should\u00a0learn \u201ceverything about the FBI investigation,\u201d Manzo testified.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Speaking clearly and confidently, Manzo said Baca was kept in the loop as sheriff\u2019s officials tried to interfere with the FBI.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">After a sheriff\u2019s deputy did not adhere to an order from Tanaka restricting visits to the inmate and allowed FBI agents into the jail to speak with the man, Manzo said he watched as his supervisor\u00a0nervously walked into Baca\u2019s office to alert him of the mistake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Manzo testified that his supervisor later said Baca had not been upset by the news \u2014\u00a0a description defense attorneys indicated they will home\u00a0in on when they cross-examine Manzo on Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-595 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/FBI-IMAGE-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"FBI Photo\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/FBI-IMAGE-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/FBI-IMAGE-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/FBI-IMAGE-1024x1021.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Throughout Manzo\u2019s testimony, Fox played audio excerpts from\u00a0the many interviews sheriff\u2019s officials conducted with the inmate informant as they tried to decipher what the FBI was investigating. While Baca was not present for the interviews and\u00a0is\u00a0never mentioned, Fox hopes jurors will conclude he had set the operation in motion and was guiding it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Earlier on Thursday, jurors heard from Bob Olmsted, a retired Sheriff\u2019s Department commander and an early whistleblower about problems with excessive force in county jails.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Olmsted, who unsuccessfully ran to replace Baca after the sheriff announced his retirement in 2014,\u00a0testified that he spoke to Baca three times to alert the sheriff about \u201csignificant problems and force issues\u201d at Men\u2019s Central Jail in 2010 and 2011.\u00a0Baca brushed him off and never gave him a chance to fully lay out his concerns, Olmsted told jurors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThe force issues that are going on are out of control,\u201d Olmsted said he cautioned Baca in a 10-minute meeting in the sheriff&#8217;s office. \u201cThere are going to be lawsuits like crazy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Under cross-examination by a defense attorney, Olmsted said Tanaka had told him of ambitions\u00a0to \u201cone day be sheriff and be sheriff for the next 15 years,\u201d and that the undersheriff and other department\u00a0brass sometimes colluded to keep Baca in the dark about goings-on in the department.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<aside class=\"trb_embed\" data-content-size=\"large\" data-content-type=\"blurb\">\n<div id=\"trb_em_b_90893636\" class=\"trb_embed_blurb\" data-load-type=\"commentFrame\" data-frame-width=\"100%\" data-frame-height=\"100%\" data-frame-class=\"trb_em_b_if\" data-frame-scroll=\"no\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<div class=\"trb_ar_by\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"trb_ar_by\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"trb_ar_by\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ex-deputy says then-L.A.
