If you have a loved one with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/health\/do-the-new-blood-pressure-guidelines-affect-me\/\">hypertension<\/a>\u00a0or is at risk for it, consider giving a home blood pressure monitor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/cro\/blood-pressure-monitors.htm\">tests<\/a> of 25 blood pressure monitors, performance varied greatly, but you can find a recommended model for as little as $40.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"parbase section text\">\n<div class=\"text-container\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/cro\/news\/2015\/04\/blood-pressure-how-low-do-you-really-need-to-go\/index.htm\">High blood pressure<\/a> is more common than you may think. About one in every three people has it<a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/cro\/news\/2015\/04\/blood-pressure-how-low-do-you-really-need-to-go\/index.htm\">,<\/a> including about 65 percent of people 60 and older. According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heart.org\/HEARTORG\/Conditions\/HighBloodPressure\/WhyBloodPressureMatters\/Assess-Your-High-Blood-Pressure-Related-Risks_UCM_301829_Article.jsp\" target=\"_blank\">American Heart Association<\/a>, those with hypertension or suspected high blood pressure should routinely monitor themselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;People with hypertension should check their blood pressure at least twice a week at about the same time of day, and as often as twice a day if there are any problems or if their treatment has changed,&#8221; says Consumer Reports&#8217; chief medical adviser, Marvin M. Lipman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;Checking blood pressure at home is one way of making sure that your treatment is adequate,&#8221; he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">That&#8217;s important because when not well-controlled, high blood pressure can lead to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/cro\/health\/medical-treatments-conditions\/heart-guide\/index.htm\">heart disease<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/cro\/2013\/01\/how-to-avoid-a-stroke-new-guidelines\/index.htm\">stroke,<\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/cro\/2012\/12\/kidney-disease-is-now-more-common-than-diabetes\/index.htm\">kidney problems<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:
