{"id":28416,"date":"2016-12-13T20:51:19","date_gmt":"2016-12-14T04:51:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=28416"},"modified":"2016-12-13T21:06:58","modified_gmt":"2016-12-14T05:06:58","slug":"abc-fox-investigation-whitefish-family-torn-apart-by-white-nationalists-notoriety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=28416","title":{"rendered":"ABC Fox Investigation: Whitefish, family torn apart by white nationalist&#8217;s notoriety"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><script type='text\/javascript' src='http:\/\/KTMF.images.worldnow.com\/interface\/js\/WNVideo.js?rnd=698207237;hostDomain=www.abcfoxmontana.com;playerWidth=630;playerHeight=355;isShowIcon=true;clipId=12961786;flvUri=;partnerclipid=;adTag=News;advertisingZone=;enableAds=true;landingPage=;islandingPageoverride=;playerType=STANDARD_EMBEDDEDscript;controlsType=fixed'><\/script><a title=\"ABC FOX Montana Local News, Weather, Sports KTMF | KWYB\" href=\"http:\/\/www.abcfoxmontana.com\">ABC FOX Montana Local News, Weather, Sports KTMF | KWYB<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">An ABC FOX Montana investigation into Richard Spencer, the part-time Whitefish resident who is inspiring white supremacists across the country.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> Our reporting has uncovered an unexpected by-product of Spencer&#8217;s notoriety &#8211; &#8211; a family and a community torn apart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Spencer\u2019s latest news-storm came last week when he spoke at Texas A &amp; M, provoking heated confrontation and once-again, mentions of Montana &#8211; &#8211; and Whitefish specifically &#8211; &#8211; as his part-time home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">So, we went back to Whitefish &#8211; &#8211; and here&#8217;s what we uncovered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Richard Spencer was raised in Texas, but has been spending time in Whitefish for years with his family. His mother, Sherry Spencer, still lives in a beautiful home at Whitefish Mountain Resort. She also runs a business downtown, but perhaps not for long.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;Hail trump! Hail our people! Hail victory!&#8221; says Richard Spencer.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28423\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28423\" style=\"width: 209px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28423 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/richard-spencer-209x300.jpg\" alt=\"richard-spencer\" width=\"209\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28423\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Richard Spencer<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In a speech last month at the National Policy Institute&#8217;s annual convention, the crowd&#8217;s Nazi-like response rocketed Richard Spencer into the media stratosphere. But back here on Earth, and specifically in Whitefish, the war over Spencer&#8217;s white nationalist views has locals fighting battles in the newspaper and on the street &#8211; &#8211; 22 Lupfer Avenue specifically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It\u2019s a new building in Whitefish&#8217;s downtown historic district. First owned by Richard Spencer, and now owned by his mother, Sherry. There are vacation rentals on the top floor, businesses lease at street-level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But Sherry says her son&#8217;s political views &#8211; &#8211; and his detractors &#8211; &#8211; are forcing her to sell the property. In an email to us, Sherry says, &#8220;As painful as this is, I am exploring a potential sale of the building.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">One of those detractors is Tanya Gersh, a prominent member of the community, who told me in an email: &#8220;She (Sherry) is profiting off of the people of the local community, all the while having facilitated Richard\u2019s work spreading hate by letting him live and use her home address for his organization.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> Virginia\u2019s state corporation commission still lists Sherry&#8217;s home as the principle office location for Richard\u2019s white nationalist organization, The National Policy Institute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">And a dive into Sherry&#8217;s Facebook page supports the fact that Richard has spent a substantial amount of time with his mother in Whitefish, snow skiing, water skiing, hiking, holidays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Sherry\u2019s Facebook page also has photos of her son when he spoke at the Mencken Club&#8217;s annual gathering in 2010, A group the Southern Poverty Law Center refers to as<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cA band of white nationalists and pseudo academic racists.\u201d Pictures also show Sherry and her husband attending.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In Sherry&#8217;s email to me, she says, &#8220;As parents, we deeply love our son, as we always will. We unequivocally do not agree with the extreme positions espoused by Richard.&#8221;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> She goes on to say, &#8220;We are stunned by the actions of Love Lives Here, an organization claiming to advocate tolerance and equal treatment of all citizens, yet coursing financial harm to many innocent parties.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28425\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28425\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28425 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/richard-spencer-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"richard-spencer-1\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/richard-spencer-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/richard-spencer-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/richard-spencer-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/richard-spencer-1.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28425\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Richard Spencer<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Ina Albert, Love Lives Here co-founder, says, &#8220;I don&#8217;t know what she&#8217;s talking about. We don&#8217;t cause financial harm to anybody.&#8221;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> Human rights group Love Lives Here has been vocally opposed to Richard Spencer&#8217;s views, but its co-founder says she has no problem with Richard spending time, or his mother doing business in Whitefish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t know what he does when he comes here,\u201d says Albert. \u201cBut that is not our problem with Richard Spencer. It is the national policy institute and what that stands for and our town being smeared by his philosophy.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Tanya says she does have a problem with it, though. She says, Sherry &#8220;Could address this by selling the building, making a donation to human rights efforts, and making a statement in opposition to white supremacist ideas spread by Richard.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">One thing on which both Tanya and Sherry agree: The tenants at 22 Lupfer are stuck in the middle. The owner of Whitefish Aesthetics tells me her association with the building is destroying her business and she&#8217;s moving out if Sherry doesn&#8217;t sell it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Sherry wrote to Tanya that, \u201cHer son&#8217;s actions have been a source of anguish within her family.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It\u2019s also been a source of contention in Whitefish. A letter to the editor of the Daily Interlake: &#8220;The mob rule reaction to Richard Spencer&#8217;s mere existence in Whitefish reminds me of the old Frankenstein movies where the townspeople gathered with pitchforks and torches.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">And: \u201cThis \u2018group\u2019 which is supposed to love all, only loves those who agree with them.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> A town divided, a mother torn, and a man whose mission is continuing to stir controversy on a national, and very local level.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gaohvSSUezE\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The Southern Poverty Law Center, which keeps track of racist groups and organizations, stated this about Spencer:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;As head of the National Policy Institute (NPI), Richard Spencer is one of the country\u2019s most successful young white nationalist leaders \u2014a suit-and-tie version of the white supremacists of old, a kind of professional racist in khakis.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">For more information about Spencer click here:<strong> \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/fighting-hate\/extremist-files\/individual\/richard-bertrand-spencer-0\">Southern Poverty Law Center<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ABC FOX Montana Local News, Weather, Sports KTMF | KWYB An ABC FOX Montana investigation into Richard Spencer, the part-time Whitefish resident who is inspiring white supremacists across the country.
