All that can be heard are screams of \u201cStop!\u201d in the background.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cPlease stop! Just stop, Daddy. Just stop.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The call was made Monday night <\/span>from<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> the home of South Carolina state Rep. Chris Corley, a young politician\u00a0who made headlines last year when he staunchly fought to keep the Confederate flag flying on the statehouse grounds. The screaming voices appear to have come from his children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Corley hit his wife in the face and threatened to kill her in front of their\u00a0children, according to an incident report from the Aiken County Sheriff\u2019s Office. His wife told investigators that Corley only stopped hitting her because the children were screaming and her head was bleeding. (Aiken County Sheriff\u2019s Office)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The 36-year-old Republican lawmaker, who has a law office in Augusta, Ga., was elected to represent South Carolina\u2019s 84th District in 2014. He was reelected without opposition this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Corley\u2019s\u00a0arrest comes after a legislative session in which South Carolina lawmakers\u00a0passed a sweeping reform bill that toughens\u00a0punishments in domestic violence cases and bars offenders from possessing guns.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"slug_inline_bb\" class=\"wp-inline-bb pb-centered-bb has-subscribe-promo\" data-google-query-id=\"CIj13-6KoNECFUSqaQodlyQF2g\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aikenstandard.com\/news\/legislators-talk-guns-domestic-violence\/article_97db6f5d-5633-566b-bc44-dd15b2ab7eda.html\">In a December 2014 interview with the Aiken Standard<\/a>, Corley, then newly elected, had some reservations about imposing a gun ban to solve domestic violence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cAs far as what we can do as <\/span>government<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">, you know, stiffer mandatory penalties. I don\u2019t know that saying you can\u2019t have a gun because you get convicted of domestic violence, I don\u2019t know if that\u2019s going to stop someone from future domestic violence,\u201d Corley said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But Corley <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scstatehouse.gov\/sess121_2015-2016\/hj15\/20150414.htm#p95\">voted to pass the bill<\/a>, which includes a partial gun ban.\u00a0Gov. Nikki Haley (R)\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.postandcourier.com\/archives\/s-c-takes-first-step-on-domestic-violence\/article_7bd0da05-084c-5161-8d05-73383964534f.html\">signed it into law in June 2015<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Online records show\u00a0that Corley posted a $20,000 bond shortly after his arrest. He was ordered to not contact his wife and was barred from handling a firearm, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/children-scream-just-stop-in-911-call-from-lawmakers-home\/2016\/12\/30\/ec676d18-ced3-11e6-85cd-e66532e35a44_story.html?utm_term=.1239f9413bb1\">according to the Associated Press<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The felony charges he\u2019s facing carry a total of\u00a0up to 15 years in prison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Corley is, perhaps, best known in South Carolina as the legislator who fiercely fought to keep the Confederate flag hoisted outside the\u00a0statehouse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"interstitial-link\"><i><\/i><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Lawmakers debated removing the flag last year in the aftermath of the massacre of nine parishioners inside\u00a0the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, a historically black church in Charleston, S.C. Among the victims was state Sen. Clementa Pinckney (D). This month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/post-nation\/wp\/2016\/12\/15\/jurors-begin-deliberating-in-charleston-church-shooting-trial\/?utm_term=.06579d106fa8\">Dylann Roof was\u00a0convicted<\/a>\u00a0of the murders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">During the lengthy debate last year, Corley suggested replacing it with the white flag of surrender and held up a piece of paper taped to a pencil to illustrate his point, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/children-scream-just-stop-in-911-call-from-lawmakers-home\/2016\/12\/30\/ec676d18-ced3-11e6-85cd-e66532e35a44_story.html?utm_term=.1239f9413bb1\">the AP\u00a0reported<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The flag was removed in July 2015, a\u00a0month after the shooting. But Corley refused to give up the fight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">He sponsored a bill that would allow voters to decide on whether to return the flag. The bill\u00a0went nowhere, the AP reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In December 2015, he sent out Christmas cards to his colleagues that featured a photo of the flag at the statehouse, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestate.com\/news\/politics-government\/politics-columns-blogs\/the-buzz\/article48214945.html\">according to the State<\/a>.
