{"id":29005,"date":"2017-01-26T19:48:35","date_gmt":"2017-01-27T03:48:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=29005"},"modified":"2017-01-26T19:48:35","modified_gmt":"2017-01-27T03:48:35","slug":"pipeline-leaks-138600-gallons-diesel-northern-iowa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=29005","title":{"rendered":"Pipeline leaks 138,600 gallons of diesel in northern Iowa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"DES MOINES REGISTER - Embed Player\" src=\"http:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/videos\/embed\/97073218\/?fullsite=true\" width=\"540\" height=\"304\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>An investigation is ongoing on how a\u00a0pipeline leaked 138,600 gallons of diesel fuel in Worth County early\u00a0Wednesday morning, according to\u00a0Magellan Midstream Partners L.P., the\u00a0pipeline company.<\/p>\n<p>A subsidiary of Magellan Midstream last week settled a lawsuit with the federal government for gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel spills in three states.<\/p>\n<p>The 3,300 barrels of diesel leaked out of Magellan&#8217;s 12-inch\u00a0pipeline system near Hanlontown around 390th Street and Wheelerwood Road, said Bruce Heine, spokesman for Magellan.\u00a0A portion of Wheelerwood Road will be closed for two days, according to the Worth County Sheriff&#8217;s Office.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/news\/2017\/01\/26\/iowa-pipeline-spill-cleanup-begins-cause-leak-still-unknown\/97084402\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>UPDATE: Cleanup underway; cause still unknown<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<iframe src='http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/video\/embed?id=45063400' width='640' height='360' scrolling='no' style='border:none;'><\/iframe><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s a big one \u2014\u00a0it\u2019s significant,&#8221; said\u00a0Jeff Vansteenburg, a field office supervisor for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. &#8220;The responsible party is Magellan, so they\u2019ll have to bear the cost of clean up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The pipeline leaked on private agricultural land, said Karen Grimes, spokeswoman for the Iowa DNR.\u00a0There is a\u00a0small stream near the leak, but Grimes said no surface water has been contaminated. The Iowa DNR has not uncovered any underground water contamination.<\/p>\n<p>The leak occurred when the pipeline ruptured and diesel sprayed out, Grimes said.\u00a0Magellan reported the leak around 8 a.m. It\u00a0was initially reported that 63,000 gallons leaked out, Grimes said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They found that it\u2019s basically pooled into a farm field that\u2019s near the break and has not reached the water in the state,&#8221; Grimes said.\u00a0&#8220;There\u2019s a little creek, but it has not reached any surface waters at this time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Heine said it&#8217;s unknown what caused the leak at this time. Vansteenburg said nothing struck the pipe that would cause it to leak.
