billionaire hedge fund manager who has only lost money during three of his 34 years in business. <\/span><\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\".tehuqz33ls.2.1.1.0.0.3.$0\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">He\u2019s been praised by <a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/2016\/04\/30\/warren-buffett-hedge-funds\/\">hedge fund critic<\/a> <strong>Warren Buffett<\/strong> and nicknamed \u201cThe Oracle of Boston.\u201d His letters to Baupost Group investors are among the most sought-after on Wall Street, which makes the fact that they\u2019re individually <\/span>water-marked<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> to identify the intended recipient, should he or she consider passing it on, extra exasperating. Like many of his peers in the industry, he maintains an extremely low profile. But there\u2019s nothing like a mad-man inhabiting the White House to get a person talking, which is why Klarman <\/span>choose<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> to wade into the topic that is <strong>Donald J. Trump<\/strong> in his most recent communiqu\u00e9, knowing full well it would garner press across the Internet, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/02\/06\/business\/dealbook\/sorkin-seth-klarman-trump-investors.html?ref=dealbook\">starting with <em>The New York Times.<\/em><\/a> \u201cDespite my preference to stay out of the media,\u201d he wrote in the letter obtained by <strong>Andrew Ross Sorkin,<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019ve taken the view that each of us can be bystanders, or we can be upstanders. I choose upstander.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\".tehuqz33ls.2.1.1.0.0.3.$1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Investors who\u2019ve been swept up in the Trump rally, and its promise of \u201cstimulative tax cuts,\u201d have been \u201cignoring the risks from America-first protectionism and the erection of new trade barriers,\u201c wrote Klarman. Worse, he says, Trump cheerleaders on Wall Street are ignoring the real problems holding down wages while offering all the wrong solutions. \u201cPresident Trump may be able to temporarily hold off the sweep of automation and globalization by cajoling companies to keep jobs at home, but bolstering inefficient and uncompetitive enterprises is likely to only temporarily stave off market forces. While they might be popular, the reason the U.S. long ago abandoned protectionist trade policies is because they not only don\u2019t work, they actually leave society worse off.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\".tehuqz33ls.2.1.1.0.0.3.$1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Even if Trump delivers on lowering tax rates, Klarman warns investors against relying on voodoo economics to fix the national debt. Slashing rates could \u201cdrive government deficits considerably higher,\u201d he wrote. \u201cRising interest rates alone would balloon the federal <\/span>deficit,<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> because interest payments on the massive outstanding government debt would skyrocket from today\u2019s artificially low levels.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\".tehuqz33ls.2.1.1.0.0.3.$1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Then, of course, there\u2019s the market risk inherent in placing the nation\u2019s foreign policy in the hands of a capricious blowhard who recently lashed out at <em>a U.S. ally<\/em> because, according to his own staff, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/online\/trump-was-apparently-feeling-some-fatigue-during-contentious-call-with-australia\/\"><em>he was tired.<\/em><\/a> (It\u2019s important to make sure your presidents get their afternoon naps.) \u201cThe erratic tendencies and overconfidence in his own wisdom and judgment that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/people\/donald-trump#intcid=dt-hot-link\">Donald Trump<\/a> has demonstrated to date are inconsistent with strong leadership and sound decision-making,\u201d Klarman wrote in his note. \u201cThe big picture for investors is this: Trump is high volatility, and investors generally abhor volatility and shun uncertainty.
