Former Los Angeles County Sheriff<\/a> Lee Baca<\/a> must decide within a week whether to pay\u00a0$100,000 in damages stemming\u00a0from a civil lawsuit\u00a0involving an\u00a0inmate abuse case or face liens\u00a0on\u00a0his assets, an attorney for the inmate said Friday.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The money is part of a 2013 judgment\u00a0handed down by a jury in a federal civil rights suit over injuries suffered at the hands of deputies by inmate Tyler Willis while he was housed in Men\u2019s Central Jail in 2009. Punitive damages were\u00a0assessed against Baca, three <\/span>deputies and a captain.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0During an appearance Thursday in federal court in Riverside,\u00a0Baca said he\u00a0would consult his wife about paying his portion of the judgment \u2014 $100,000 \u2014 and respond by next Friday,\u00a0said Samuel Paz, an attorney for Willis.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

\"los_angeles_times_logo\"\u201cBaca has to pay up\u00a0or we will proceed to collect in debtors court,\u201d\u00a0Paz said. \u201cIf necessary we will go forward with proceedings to identify his assets and place liens to collect on the debt.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
