\"\"The former deputy city treasurer for the City of Compton was arrested Wednesday on federal charges related to the theft of more than $3.7 million of city funds, according to officials.<\/span><\/p>\n

Salvador Galvan, 47, of La Mirada, was arrested this morning by special agents with the FBI pursuant to a criminal complaint that charges him with theft concerning programs receiving federal funds.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the second arrest on this theft at the City of Compton.<\/span><\/p>\n

Galvan faces federal charges stemming from allegations that he stole $3,721,924 from May 2010 through December 2016, according to authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Galvan, who worked in the Compton Treasurer\u2019s Office for more than 20 years, was responsible for tallying the cash received by the city as payment for parking tickets, business licenses\u00a0<\/span> and other fees.<\/span><\/p>\n

After the cash was counted, Galvan prepared the money for deposit into a city bank account.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the criminal complaint, Galvan skimmed cash from the daily receipts on numerous occasions. An audit of the city\u2019s cash deposits \u201cidentified discrepancies which vary from approximately $200 to $8,000 per day,\u201d according to the affidavit in support of the complaint.<\/span><\/p>\n

The FBI interviewed Galvan\u2019s supervisor, who \u201creflected about Galvan\u2019s time in the office, his unexplained affluence, and his generosity,\u201d according to the affidavit.<\/span><\/p>\n

The supervisor told investigators that Galvan went from driving an \u201cold Toyota\u201d to increasingly luxurious vehicles, including a black Audi sedan.<\/span><\/p>\n

That affidavit states that Galvan told his supervisor that he purchased a residence in La Mirada and demolished the house so he could rebuild it \u2013 all on an annual salary of approximately $60,000.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe people of Compton deserved better,\u201d said Acting U.S. Attorney Sandra R. Brown. \u201cThis defendant stole millions of dollars intended to help residents, placing his own greed over their interests.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Galvan was arrested late last year by the Los Angeles County Sheriff\u2019s Department in relation to the theft of city funds. The federal case that led to Galvan\u2019s arrest this morning resulted from a further investigation by the FBI.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDefendant Galvan violated the trust of the public he served by stealing money designated for the betterment of the Compton community,\u201d said Deirdre Fike, the Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI\u2019s Los Angeles Field Office. \u201cBy operating a scheme whereby he skimmed Compton city coffers to live beyond his means, Mr. Galvan faces significant federal charges and time behind bars.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

If convicted of the embezzlement charge, Galvan would face a statutory maximum sentence of five years in federal prison.<\/span><\/p>\n

Galvan is presumed innocent unless found guilty.<\/span><\/p>\n
