LOS ANGELES<\/strong> \u2013 A Marina Del Rey man who embezzled nearly $370,000 from the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles while he worked for the organization as senior property manager was sentenced today to a year and eight months in federal prison, according to authorities.<\/p>\n

Channing Smack<\/strong>, 51, was sentenced after pleading guilty in January to mail fraud and money laundering, federal officials said.<\/p>\n

In addition to the prison term, Judge Otis D. Wright II ordered Smack to pay $368,278 in restitution.<\/p>\n

As senior property manager, officials said Smack was responsible for managing the Girl Scouts’ 22 properties in the Los Angeles area.<\/p>\n

Smack approved payments for maintenance services allegedly provided by a firm called ZB Land Maintenance & Engineering, which was registered under the name of Smack\u2019s deceased brother, federal officials.<\/p>\n

Between August 2012 and October 2013, the Girl Scouts issued 23 checks to ZB that totaled $368,278, officials said.<\/p>\n

The evidence uncovered during an investigation by the FBI showed that most of the checks to ZB were then deposited into one of two bank accounts opened under the names of the company and Smack\u2019s deceased brother.<\/p>\n

Smack used these funds to pay for personal expenses.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe offense conduct in this matter is serious,\u201d prosecutors wrote in a sentencing position paper filed with the court that agreed with a pre-sentence report that noted \u201cthis is a significant amount to the victim, Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles, a California, not-for-profit organization that strives to empower young girls.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
