disability payments to herself while she worked for the state\u2019s Employment Development Department, prosecutors stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/pit-bull-owner-sentenced-15-years-life-animals-killed-woman\/district-attorney-los-angeles\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6360\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6360\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/District-Attorney-Los-Angeles.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"282\" height=\"261\" \/><\/a>\u201cPeople were relying on these payments and they were unwittingly taken advantage of by someone who was supposed to help them,\u201d District Attorney George Gasc\u00f3n said. \u201cI will continue to strive for clean government and rid corruption from public offices.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Karina Maria Valdez, 38, was charged with one felony count each of embezzlement, misappropriation of public funds, perjury, identity theft, and grand theft.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Beginning in 2014, Valdez is accused of manipulating the accounts of people seeking disability benefits while she worked as a disability insurance program representative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"> She allegedly routed debit cards with fraudulent information to herself and withdrew roughly $215,000 over a five-year period, according to authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size:
