{"id":42748,"date":"2021-05-17T12:43:36","date_gmt":"2021-05-17T19:43:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=42748"},"modified":"2021-05-17T12:43:36","modified_gmt":"2021-05-17T19:43:36","slug":"corrections-officer-sentenced-to-prison-for-five-years-for-assaulting-three-inmates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=42748","title":{"rendered":"Corrections Officer Sentenced to Prison for Five Years for Assaulting Three Inmates"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"field field--name-field-pr-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item even\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">A former correctional officer with the Rapides Parish Sheriff\u2019s Office (RPSO), Detention Center 1, in Alexandria, Louisiana, was sentenced Monday in federal court for assaulting three inmates, according to officials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/feds-tennessee-school-district-agrees-fix-end-discriminatory-practices\/department-of-justice-loo\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9242\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9242 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Department-of-Justice-Loo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"433\" height=\"245\" \/><\/a>He is accused of violating the civil rights of three inmates in his custody.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">U.S. District Court Judge Dee Drell sentenced Cody Richardson, 31, to five years and 10 months in federal prison for each count, to run concurrently, followed by two years of supervised release. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Richardson previously pleaded guilty on May 28, 2020, to three felony counts of using excessive force against pretrial detainees housed at the RPSO facility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">According to court documents and statements made during the hearing, Richardson, while on duty as a correctional officer, tased three different detainees who were restrained and\/or not resisting. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/woman-convicted-of-making-video-depicting-the-killing-of-puppies-chickens-and-kittens\/courtroom-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-15368\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-15368\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Courtroom.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"346\" height=\"313\" \/><\/a>Specifically, on Jan. 28, 2018, Richardson tased detainee K.F. while K.F. had his hands up, causing him to fall to the ground, then continued to tase K.F. three more times despite the fact that he was not resisting. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">On Feb. 24, 2018, Richardson drive-stunned detainee S.M. 15-20 times while S.M. was shackled to a bench by his ankles, then, after other officers secured S.M.\u2019s wrists in handcuffs, continued tasing him and kicked him once in the abdomen. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Finally, on March 19, 2018, Richardson deployed a taser into detainee J.A.\u2019s back, causing him to fall to the ground. He then sat on top of a table in the cellblock and continued to activate the taser four more times while J.A. thrashed on the floor, screaming in pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/man-and-his-sister-charged-in-multimillion-dollar-fake-open-house-scam\/cropped-justice-scales-jpg\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-36219\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-36219 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/cropped-Justice-Scales.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"90\" \/><\/a>\u201cThese kinds of civil rights violations by correctional officers will not be tolerated,\u201d said Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Pamela S. Karlan for the Justice Department\u2019s Civil Rights Division. \u201cBy perpetuating these blatant and callous assaults on inmates, Richardson abused the authority granted to him as an officer of the law, undermined public trust in law enforcement, and caused harm to individuals whom he had a responsibility to protect. The Justice Department will continue to vigorously prosecute officers who violate the civil rights of vulnerable inmates in their care, and ensure that such officers are held accountable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u201cCitizens who are detained by law enforcement officers have a right to be treated with fairness and respect,\u201d said Acting U.S. Attorney Alexander C. Van Hook of the Western District of Louisiana. \u201cThose in law enforcement who choose to violate the civil rights of those in their custody and control must suffer the consequences of their actions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>DOJ NOTED:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">This case was investigated by the FBI.
