{"id":43311,"date":"2021-07-07T14:18:22","date_gmt":"2021-07-07T21:18:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=43311"},"modified":"2021-07-07T14:18:22","modified_gmt":"2021-07-07T21:18:22","slug":"online-dating-service-match-com-settles-consumer-protection-lawsuit-for-2-million","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=43311","title":{"rendered":"Online Dating Service, Match.com, Settles Consumer Protection Lawsuit for $2 Million"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><b>LOS ANGELES<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Match Group Inc., a global online dating service company, will pay $2 million to settle a civil lawsuit alleging the company charged customers for automatic renewal without their express consent, according to officials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/pit-bull-owner-sentenced-15-years-life-animals-killed-woman\/district-attorney-los-angeles\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6360\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6360 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/District-Attorney-Los-Angeles.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"282\" height=\"261\" \/><\/a>\u201cConsumers should be protected from practices that deceptively and unfairly force them to pay for something they don\u2019t want,\u201d District Attorney George Gasc\u00f3n said. \u201cWe want companies to thrive, but they should be mindful to not abuse technology tools to violate consumer protections.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Under a judgment negotiated with the company, entered today in the Santa Cruz County Superior Court and signed by Judge Timothy Volkmann, Match Group was additionally ordered to comply with the following terms:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Clearly and conspicuously disclose its automatic renewal terms;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Get consumers\u2019 affirmative consent to the terms through a checkbox before charging for an automatic renewal or continuous service;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Email consumers a confirmation of the transaction after they pay, which clearly includes the automatic renewal terms;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Allow consumers to easily cancel the service, including online;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Avoid using misleading online sales information and payment mechanisms.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The company did not admit wrongdoing. It has already taken steps to correct its violations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Federal and state law requires businesses to provide consumers with clear disclosure of their automatic renewal terms and conditions before charging them for the service. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The disclosure must include instructions for the cancelation of the automatic renewal subscription.
