He was sentenced to five years in prison and three years of supervised release for his hate crime.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ilCQvq19OU4\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">&nbsp;According to documents filed in connection with this case, Mouat admitted that he confronted a group of Black teenagers, including the victim, at a state park in Monroe, Michigan.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-pr-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item even\">\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?attachment_id=43320\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-43320\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/download-12.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-43320\"\/><\/a><figcaption><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Left to right: Defendant Lee Mouat and victim Devin Freelon who got a fractured jaw<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Mouat repeatedly used racial slurs and said that Black people had no right to use the public beach where the incident occurred.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Mouat then struck one of the teens, Devin Freelon, in the face with a bike lock, knocking out several of the victim\u2019s teeth, lacerating his face and mouth, and fracturing his jaw. Mouat also attempted to strike another Black teenager with the bike lock.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u201cThe defendant brutally attacked teenagers at a public beach because these young people are Black,\u201d said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke for the Justice Department\u2019s Civil Rights Division. \u201cHate-fueled violent crimes like this have no place in our communities. Protecting Americans from hate crimes is a top priority of the Justice Department and we will use every tool available to bring perpetrators to justice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center css-axufdj evys1bk0 wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">One witness said Mr. Mouat referred to the victim and his friends with a racial slur and also called them \u201cmonsters,\u201d according to the complaint. \u201cI want to hit them with this cooler\u201d and \u201cI wish someone would say something to me so I can beat them,\u201d he said, according to this witness.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center css-axufdj evys1bk0 wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Another witness told investigators that Mr. Mouat yelled \u201cBlack lives don\u2019t matter\u201d at the victim and his friends before the attack.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center css-axufdj evys1bk0 wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">A friend of the victim told investigators that Mr. Mouat yelled at them twice, saying, \u201cThis is my beach.\u201d Both times he referred to them as a racial slur, this friend said. He also said Mr. Mouat told the group that \u201cI\u2019ve got something for you in my car,\u201d before he attacked the victim with the bike lock<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-pr-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item even\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u201cOur office is committed to protecting the rights of all citizens, and prosecuting hate crimes is a top priority,\u201d said Acting U.S. Attorney Saima Mohsin for the Eastern District of Michigan. \u201cThe cowardly and unprovoked attack on this young victim is terribly disturbing.
