{"id":43913,"date":"2021-09-02T15:49:41","date_gmt":"2021-09-02T22:49:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=43913"},"modified":"2021-09-02T15:53:36","modified_gmt":"2021-09-02T22:53:36","slug":"san-fernando-valley-man-admits-to-starting-fire-in-santa-monica-restaurant-during-last-years-civil-unrest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=43913","title":{"rendered":"San Fernando Valley Man Admits to Starting Fire in Santa Monica Restaurant During Last Year\u2019s Civil Unrest"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">LOS ANGELES<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"> A West Hills man who started a fire that caused substantial damage to a Santa Monica restaurant during the civil disturbances that erupted during the spring of 2020 plead guilty today to a federal criminal charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Micah Tillmon, 20, pleaded guilty to one count of possession of an unregistered destructive device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Justice-Depart.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1057\" width=\"267\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Justice-Depart.jpg 320w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Justice-Depart-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Justice-Depart-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; According to his plea agreement, on June 4, 2020, Tillmon entered Sake House by Hikari, a Japanese restaurant located in downtown Santa Monica. The business was closed because of the civil unrest occurring in the city at that time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">While inside the restaurant, Tillmon possessed and used an incendiary device to ignite a fire that rapidly grew, enveloped the entire restaurant space, and spread to other areas of the building adjacent to the restaurant, officials stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">According to the affidavit in support of the criminal complaint previously filed in this case, security video from the restaurant shows Tillmon removing \u201ca red tube-shaped object from his jacket, which he placed behind the reception desk area of the restaurant before walking away. Within seconds of that action, smoke and fire appeared from the area\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Santa Monica Fire Department (SMFD) responded to the fire and extinguished the flames using several fire trucks and numerous personnel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Due to safety concerns that accompanied the city\u2019s civil unrest, SMFD prematurely abandoned the scene. As a result, SMFD needed to return to the scene several times throughout the night to extinguish additional flare-ups. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The restaurant has since permanently closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/download-16-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-43915\" width=\"379\" height=\"252\"\/><figcaption>Firefighters work on an arson fire Sunday, May 31, 2020, at Sake House by Hikari near Santa Monica Boulevard and Fourth Street in Santa Monica during a day of civil unrest. (Photo by Axel Koester, Contributing Photographer)<br \/><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Tillmon was identified by detectives with the Santa Monica Police Department, who reviewed numerous security videos and social media posts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Tillmon was also linked to the fire when investigators uncovered a video showing his white Ford Explorer parking next to the Sake House four minutes before the fire started and then reversing across the street soon after the fire started, according to court documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; In his plea agreement, Tillmon admitted to knowingly possessing an incendiary device that had not been registered with the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record, the central federal registry for all items regulated under the National Firearms Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; U.S. District Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald scheduled a Dec. 6 sentencing hearing. Tillmon is facing up to 10 years in federal prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Santa Monica Police Department investigated this matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size
