{"id":48206,"date":"2021-10-13T08:22:25","date_gmt":"2021-10-13T15:22:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=48206"},"modified":"2021-10-13T08:22:25","modified_gmt":"2021-10-13T15:22:25","slug":"texas-pharmacist-admits-adulterating-drug-used-in-cataract-surgeries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=48206","title":{"rendered":"Texas Pharmacist Admits Adulterating Drug Used in Cataract Surgeries"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"field field--name-field-pr-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item even\">\n<p class=\"rtejustify\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">A Texas man pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of adulterating a drug that was used in cataract surgeries, according to federal prosecutors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5906 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/U.S.-Department-of-Justice.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"293\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/U.S.-Department-of-Justice.jpg 200w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/U.S.-Department-of-Justice-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 293px) 100vw, 293px\" \/>According to court documents, Jack Randall Munn, 71, of Dallas, a licensed pharmacist and former owner of Guardian Pharmacy Services (Guardian), a Dallas pharmacy, oversaw the compounding of the drug for two outpatient Dallas surgical centers in 2016 and 2017. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The drug, a combination of an antibiotic and a steroid, contained an excessive amount of an inactive ingredient that can damage sensitive eye tissue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">At the time of the events described in court documents, Munn represented to the surgical centers that Guardian could compound the drug in a manner safe for injection into patients\u2019 eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"> However, the drug made by Guardian contained an excessive amount of the inactive ingredient, causing its purity and quality to fall below that which it was represented to possess.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Munn pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of distributing an adulterated drug in violation of the Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">He is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 3, 2022 and faces a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a fine of up to $100,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Munn is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The U.S. Food and Drug Administration\u2019s (FDA) Office of Criminal Investigations investigated the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Texas man pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of adulterating a drug that was used in cataract surgeries, according to federal prosecutors.
