Walter sentenced Dr. Amir Friedman, 56.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv7436967276MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Friedman plead guilty in October 2019 to one count of conspiracy to commit honest services mail and wire fraud, and to violate the Travel Act, a federal law that \u2013 among other things \u2013 forbids the use of the U.S. mail for the purpose of aiding bribery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv7436967276MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Friedman, a licensed anesthesiologist, violated the fiduciary duty he owed to his patients by accepting kickbacks and bribes for writing prescriptions for compounded medications for his patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv7436967276MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3918 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Department-of-Justice-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Department-of-Justice-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Department-of-Justice-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Department-of-Justice.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/> Compounded drugs are tailor-made products doctors may prescribe when the Food and Drug Administration-approved alternative does not meet the health needs of a patient.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv7436967276MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 From August 2013 to May 2015, Friedman conspired with New Age Pharmaceuticals Inc., a Beverly Hills-based company, and a marketer \u2013 listed in court documents as \u201cMarketer A\u201d \u2013 to violate federal law, according to authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv7436967276MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Insurance companies under the California Workers\u2019 Compensation System reimbursed New Age for dispensing prescription drugs and other pharmaceuticals. Marketer A was paid commissions for facilitating the referral of compounded drug prescriptions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv7436967276MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Marketer A provided pre-printed prescription pads for compounded drugs to Friedman and offered Friedman kickbacks and bribes for each prescription he wrote. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv7436967276MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">After Friedman wrote the kickback-tainted prescriptions, New Age dispensed the compounded drugs, billed insurance companies for reimbursement and shipped through the mail the compounded drugs to patients, officials stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv7436967276MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">In total, Friedman accepted $788,140 in kickbacks and bribes \u2013 a sum he received in the form of about 28 check payments that represented illicit proceeds from the conspiracy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv7436967276MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">He admitted in his plea agreement that he was aware that the compounded drugs he prescribed were far more expensive than equivalents, prosecutors stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv7436967276MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The FBI investigated this matter.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0LOS ANGELES A Calabasas physician was sentenced Friday to 14 months in federal prison for accepting nearly $800,000 in bribes and kickbacks, prosecutors stated.
