WASHINGTON D.C.<\/strong> \u00a0— Three defendants were arrested Wednesday on charges of providing material support to al-Shabaab, a designated foreign terrorist organization that is conducting a violent insurgency campaign in Somalia, according to federal officials.<\/p>\n

Two additional defendants are fugitives in Kenya and Somalia.<\/p>\n

The defendants are charged in an indictment, issued June 26, with one count of conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and 20 counts of providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization, officials said.<\/p>\n

The indictment was unsealed after the following arrests were made:<\/p>\n

  1. Muna Osman Jama<\/strong> , 34, was arrested at her home in Reston, Virginia.<\/li>\n
  2. Hinda Osman Dhirane <\/a>,<\/strong> 44, was arrested at her home in Kent, Washington.<\/li>\n
  3. Farhia Hassan<\/strong> was arrested at her residence in the Netherlands.<\/li>\n
  4. Fardowsa Jama Mohamed<\/strong> is a fugitive in Kenya and the subject of a pending arrest warrant.<\/li>\n
  5. Barira Hassan Abdullahi<\/strong> is a fugitive in Somalia and the subject of a pending arrest warrant.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    If convicted, each defendant faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison on each count.<\/p>\n

    The case was investigated by the FBI.<\/p>\n

    The Harakat Shabaab al-Mujahidin, commonly known as al-Shabaab, is a terrorist group conducting a violent insurgency campaign in Somalia, authorities allege.<\/p>\n

    In 2008, the U.S. government designated al-Shabaab as a foreign terrorist organization, and in February 2012, the leaders of al-Shabaab and the terrorist group al-Qa\u2019ida publicly announced the merger of the two groups.<\/p>\n
