{"id":49297,"date":"2022-04-04T17:04:57","date_gmt":"2022-04-05T00:04:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=49297"},"modified":"2022-04-04T17:05:38","modified_gmt":"2022-04-05T00:05:38","slug":"spanish-authorities-seize-90-million-russian-yacht-at-the-request-of-u-s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=49297","title":{"rendered":"Spanish Authorities Seize $90 Million Russian Yacht at the Request of U.S. (Video)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"field field--name-field-pr-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item even\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>WASHINGTON D.C.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Spanish law enforcement on Monday executed a Spanish court order freezing the Tango, a 255-foot luxury yacht, officials stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The yacht is owned by sanctioned Russian oligarch Viktor Vekselberg. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Spanish authorities acted upon the request from the U.S. Department of Justice.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YOD0YTb1Smk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-pr-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item even\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">A U.S. District Court in Washington D.C. alleged that the Tango was subject to forfeiture based on violation of U.S. bank fraud, money laundering, and sanction statutes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Separately, seizure warrants obtained in the <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The federal court also target approximately $625,000 associated with sanctioned parties held at nine U.S. financial institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"> Those seizures are based on sanctions violations by several Russian specially designated nationals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Note:\u00a0<\/strong>Footage of the seizure is available\u00a0<a class=\"ext extlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KrOUGJCMmVw\">here<\/a>. View the statement from the Attorney General on today&#8217;s seizure\u00a0<a class=\"ext extlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bAHbSVProiQ\">here<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">According to documents filed in this case, the U.S. investigation alleges that Vekselberg bought the Tango in 2011 and has owned it continuously since that time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"> It further alleges that Vekselberg used shell companies to obfuscate his interest in the Tango to avoid bank oversight into U.S. dollar transactions related thereto. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Additionally, after Vekselberg was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department on April 6, 2018, the warrant alleges that Vekselberg and those working on his behalf continued to make U.S. dollar payments through U.S. banks for the support and maintenance of the Tango and its owners. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">It also included payment for a\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">December 2020 stay at a luxury water villa resort in the Maldives and mooring fees for the yacht. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Vekselberg had an interest in these payments and therefore a license was required from the Treasury Department, which was not obtained, the court document alleges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u201cToday marks our taskforce\u2019s first seizure of an asset belonging to a sanctioned individual with close ties to the Russian regime. It will not be the last,\u201d said Attorney General Merrick B.
