{"id":49326,"date":"2022-04-07T13:40:38","date_gmt":"2022-04-07T20:40:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=49326"},"modified":"2022-04-07T13:40:38","modified_gmt":"2022-04-07T20:40:38","slug":"former-congressional-staffer-admits-stealing-public-funds-to-inflate-his-salary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=49326","title":{"rendered":"Former Congressional Staffer Admits Stealing Public Funds to Inflate His Salary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>WASHINGTON D.C.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"node-title\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">A former Congressional staffer plead guilty Thursday to the theft of public funds in connection with his scheme to fraudulently inflate his salary and bonus payments, thereby paying himself more than he was legitimately owed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-pr-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item even\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1499 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/U.S.-Justice-Dept-e1394578665196-300x170.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"170\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/U.S.-Justice-Dept-e1394578665196-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/U.S.-Justice-Dept-e1394578665196.jpg 417w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>According to court documents, Sterling Carter, 24, of Glenwood, Georgia, was employed as the Director of Operations by a Member of Congress. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">In that position, Carter was responsible for managing the office\u2019s budget and processing payroll and bonus payments for all employees in the office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"> Between November 2019 and January 2021, Carter submitted fraudulent paperwork which purported to authorize a higher salary and bonus payments for himself. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Carter concealed this theft from the Congressperson and the office\u2019s Chief of Staff by falsely representing, in both communications and a budget spreadsheet, that he was only being paid what he was legitimately owed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">In total, Carter received $79,491.67 in unauthorized salary and bonus payments.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Carter pleaded guilty in federal court to the theft of public funds. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Carter will be sentenced on July 28 and faces up to 10 years in prison.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON D.C.
