{"id":49580,"date":"2022-04-26T12:55:10","date_gmt":"2022-04-26T19:55:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=49580"},"modified":"2022-04-26T12:55:33","modified_gmt":"2022-04-26T19:55:33","slug":"pharmacist-sentenced-for-180-million-health-care-fraud-scheme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=49580","title":{"rendered":"Pharmacist Sentenced for $180 Million Health Care Fraud Scheme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-49399 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/tingey-injury-law-firm-ycdpu73kgsc-unsplash-scaled.jpeg\" alt=\"woman in dress holding sword figurine\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"node-title\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">A former Mississippi pharmacist was sentenced Monday in federal court to 10 years in prison for defrauding <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0TRICARE and private insurance companies, officials stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"> Mitchell \u201cChad\u201d Barrett paid kickbacks to distributors for the referral of medically unnecessary prescriptions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The conduct resulted in more than $180 million in fraudulent billings, including more than $50 million paid by federal health care programs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-pr-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item even\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">According to court documents, Barrett, 55, now of Gulf Breeze, Florida, and formerly of Mississippi, participated in a scheme to defraud TRICARE and other health care benefit programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6759 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Department-of-Justice-300x197.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Department-of-Justice-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Department-of-Justice-90x60.jpg 90w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Department-of-Justice.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>He distributed medically unnecessary compounded medications. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Barrett was licensed as a pharmacist in Mississippi and was a co-owner of various compounding pharmacies. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">As part of this scheme, Barrett adjusted prescription formulas to ensure the highest reimbursement without regard to medical necessity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">He solicited recruiters to procure prescriptions for high-margin compounded medications and paid those recruiters commissions based on the percentage of reimbursements paid by pharmacy benefit managers and health care benefit programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">This included commissions on claims reimbursed by TRICARE. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Barrett routinely and systematically waived or reduced copayments to be paid by beneficiaries and members, and utilized a purported copayment assistance program to falsely make it appear as if his pharmacy and its affiliate compounding pharmacies had been collecting copayments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Barrett pleaded guilty on Aug. 25 to conspiracy to engage in monetary transactions in the criminally derived property. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">In addition to the term of imprisonment, Barrett was ordered to pay restitution and forfeit all assets traced to his ill-gotten gains, according to officials.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A former Mississippi pharmacist was sentenced Monday in federal court to 10 years in prison for defrauding \u00a0TRICARE and private insurance companies, officials stated.
