{"id":49624,"date":"2022-04-28T11:04:22","date_gmt":"2022-04-28T18:04:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=49624"},"modified":"2022-04-28T11:04:22","modified_gmt":"2022-04-28T18:04:22","slug":"california-doctor-sentenced-to-seven-years-for-defrauding-medicare-out-of-12-million","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=49624","title":{"rendered":"California Doctor Sentenced to Seven Years for Defrauding Medicare Out of $12 Million"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">A California doctor was sentenced Thursday to seven years and nine months in prison for defrauding Medicare, re-packaging single-use catheters for re-use on patients, and lying at bankruptcy proceedings, officials stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12931 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/fraud-medicare-card-cube-e1499997089362-300x278.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/fraud-medicare-card-cube-e1499997089362-300x278.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/fraud-medicare-card-cube-e1499997089362.jpg 417w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>According to court documents, Donald Woo Lee, 55, of Temecula, recruited Medicare beneficiaries to his clinics, falsely diagnosed the beneficiaries, and provided the beneficiaries with medically unnecessary procedures. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Lee billed these unnecessary procedures to Medicare using an inappropriate code in order to obtain a higher reimbursement, a practice known as \u201cupcoding.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"> In addition, the evidence showed that Lee re-packaged used, contaminated catheters for re-use on patients. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/photo-by-hush-naidoo-jade-photography-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-49626\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-49626 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/yo01z-9hqaw-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"black and gray stethoscope\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/yo01z-9hqaw-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/yo01z-9hqaw-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/yo01z-9hqaw-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/yo01z-9hqaw-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/yo01z-9hqaw.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>These catheters had been cleared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for marketing as single-use only and the re-use of these devices put patients at risk of infection and other bodily injury. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Lee submitted claims of approximately $12 million to Medicare for the vein ablation procedures he performed and received $4.5 million as a result.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">In October 2019, Lee was convicted after a five-day trial, when a jury found him guilty of seven counts of health care fraud and one count of adulteration of a medical device. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Lee also pleaded guilty on March 2, 2020, to one count of submitting false declarations in a bankruptcy proceeding. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">In addition to the term of imprisonment, Lee was sentenced to serve three years of supervised release and ordered to pay more than $4.5 million in restitution to Medicare.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A California doctor was sentenced Thursday to seven years and nine months in prison for defrauding Medicare, re-packaging single-use catheters for re-use on patients, and lying at bankruptcy proceedings, officials stated.
