{"id":49630,"date":"2022-04-28T18:13:01","date_gmt":"2022-04-29T01:13:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=49630"},"modified":"2022-04-28T18:17:44","modified_gmt":"2022-04-29T01:17:44","slug":"cameroonian-sentence-to-21-months-in-prison-for-pet-purchasing-conspiracy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=49630","title":{"rendered":"Cameroonian Sentenced to 21 Months in Prison for Pet Purchasing Conspiracy"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"field field--name-field-pr-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item even\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">A Cameroonian national was sentenced Thursday to 21 months in prison for his role in a scheme to trick American consumers into paying fees for pets that were never delivered<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">He also used COVID-19 crisis as an excuse to extract higher fees from victims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">Desmond Fodje Bobga, 29, was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/cameroonian-citizen-extradited-romania-face-covid-19-related-fraud-charges\">extradited to the United States<\/a>\u00a0from Romania in April 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u201cThe Department of Justice will pursue criminals anywhere in the world when they target and exploit American consumers through fraud schemes, including when they take advantage of the circumstances presented by the COVID-19 pandemic,\u201d said Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Brian M. Boynton, head of the Justice Department\u2019s Civil Division.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">According to court documents, from approximately June 2018 to approximately June 2020, Bobga conspired with others to offer pets for sale on internet websites. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">He and others communicated by text message and email with potential victims to induce purchases. Following each purchase, Bobga and co-conspirators claimed that a transportation company would deliver the pet and provided a false tracking number for the pet, court documents stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">Bobga and his co-conspirators, posing as the transportation company, then claimed the pet transport was delayed and that the victim needed to pay additional money for delivery of the pet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">Bobga and co-conspirators told some victims that they needed to pay more money for delivery because the pet had been exposed to COVID-19, officials stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">The perpetrators used false promises and bogus documents regarding shipping fees and COVID-19 exposure to extract successive payments from victims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">Once Bobga and the co-conspirators received money directly and indirectly through wire communications from the victims, they never delivered any pets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u201cWhile many people came together to support each other during the pandemic, this defendant chose to use COVID-19 as a means to defraud the victims in this matter and he will now serve a prison sentence to answer for that crime,\u201d said U.S. Attorney Cindy K. Chung for the Western District of Pennsylvania.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u201cMr. Bobga was a scam artist, plain and simple,\u201d said Special Agent in Charge Mike Nordwall of the FBI\u2019s Pittsburgh Field Office. \u201cHe exploited those who were looking for comfort during the COVID pandemic and cashed in at their expense.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">The FBI\u2019s Pittsburgh Field Office investigated the
