{"id":49801,"date":"2022-05-14T21:02:39","date_gmt":"2022-05-15T04:02:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=49801"},"modified":"2022-05-18T12:51:35","modified_gmt":"2022-05-18T19:51:35","slug":"former-indiana-police-officer-guilty-of-beating-motorist-three-others-to-stand-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=49801","title":{"rendered":"Former Indiana Police Officer Guilty of Beating Motorist, Three Other Officers to Also Stand Trial"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"field field--name-field-pr-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item even\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Jeremy Gibson, 31, a former officer with the Muncie Police Department, in Muncie, Indiana, pleaded guilty Friday to civil rights and obstruction charges. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Specifically, the defendant pleaded guilty to a federal civil rights offense for assaulting an arrestee, and to an obstruction offense for writing a false report to cover up the incident.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3NZRlu8IYwo\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">According to court documents and statements made during the change of plea hearing, on or about May 13, 2019, Gibson initiated a traffic stop of a car because one of the car\u2019s headlights was out.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-pr-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item even\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6759 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Department-of-Justice-300x197.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Department-of-Justice-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Department-of-Justice-90x60.jpg 90w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Department-of-Justice.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>When the driver stepped out of the car, Gibson attempted to physically take him to the ground, and punched him several times with a closed fist in the process. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">As other officers also used force against the driver, Gibson delivered a knee strike to the right of his head, causing his head to swing to the side, at which point another officer delivered another knee strike to the opposite side of the driver\u2019s head. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Shortly after the incident, Gibson authored a false report about the incident.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Gibson is one of four Muncie police officers who \u2013 along with Officer Chase Winkle, Officer Corey Posey and Sergeant Joseph Krejsa \u2013 were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-sdin\/pr\/muncie-police-officers-indicted-additional-charges-excessive-force-and-obstruction\">indicted<\/a>\u00a0in April 2021 in a 17-count superseding indictment for their roles in using excessive force against arrestees and attempting to cover up the misconduct. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The other three officers are scheduled to stand trial in August 2022. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">A fifth Muncie police officer, Dalton Kurtz, previously\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-sdin\/pr\/muncie-police-officer-pleads-guilty-concealing-crime-committed-another-officer\">pleaded guilty<\/a>\u00a0on Aug. 4, 2021, to one count of misprision of felony for concealing and failing to report inappropriate use of force by Officer Winkle during a separate incident.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jeremy Gibson, 31, a former officer with the Muncie Police Department, in Muncie, Indiana, pleaded guilty Friday to civil rights and obstruction charges.
