The woman flew to Los Angeles to meet Berkett in late October 2020. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv2808605026MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The victim, who described Berkett\u2019s behavior as \u201csexually aggressive,\u201d tried on several occasions to break off the relationship following the October trip, the affidavit states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv2808605026MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In April 2021, a family member, who had learned that Berkett continued to contact the victim, called and sent text messages to Berkett\u2019s father\u2019s phone, and, on April 20, Berkett appears to have responded by saying \u201cconsider this matter closed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv2808605026MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-49826 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/h2b1a5wnsw0-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"USA flag near municipal building\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/h2b1a5wnsw0-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/h2b1a5wnsw0-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/h2b1a5wnsw0-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/h2b1a5wnsw0-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/h2b1a5wnsw0.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Berkett admitted in his plea agreement that, soon afterward in April 2021, he solicited and paid for murder-for-hire services via a website on the darknet that purported offered such services. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv2808605026MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Berkett provided the darknet group with specific directions and details about his target. As payment for the victim\u2019s murder, Berkett send the darknet group bitcoin payments totaling approximately $13,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv2808605026MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In May 2021, an undercover law enforcement officer contacted Berkett while posing as the hitman Berkett believed he had hired from the darknet group. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv2808605026MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The undercover officer sent Berkett pictures of the victim. Berkett confirmed that the pictures showed his intended victim and that he had made bitcoin payments to obtain her murder. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv2808605026MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Berkett further requested proof of her murder and made an additional $1,000 payment to the undercover officer via Western Union for her death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv2808605026MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 U.S. District\u00a0 CourtJudge Mark C. Scarsi scheduled a Sept. 12 sentencing hearing. Berkett will face a statutory maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv2808605026MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size:
