{"id":50356,"date":"2022-07-15T18:50:03","date_gmt":"2022-07-16T01:50:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=50356"},"modified":"2022-07-15T18:50:57","modified_gmt":"2022-07-16T01:50:57","slug":"maryland-man-sentenced-to-23-years-in-prison-for-sex-trafficking-firearms-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=50356","title":{"rendered":"Maryland Man Sentenced to 23 Years in Prison for Sex Trafficking, Firearms Charges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"node-title\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Second Defendant Sentenced to 10 Years for His Role in the Crimes<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-pr-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item even\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0<strong> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 WASHINGTON D.C.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7857 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/FBI-Logo-289x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"289\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/FBI-Logo-289x300.png 289w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/FBI-Logo.png 636w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 289px) 100vw, 289px\" \/>Terrell Armstead, 31, formerly of Baltimore, Maryland, was sentenced Friday to 23 years in prison for sex trafficking by force, fraud, coercion, and a related firearms offense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Armstead was found guilty in March 2020, following a jury trial in the U.S. District Court of sex trafficking by force, fraud, and coercion.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">In a related case, he pleaded guilty in September 2019 to conspiracy to resell firearms illegally and to unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0 This case was investigated by the FBI Washington Field Office\u2019s Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">According to the Washington Post, Armstead was one of three men the FBI targeted last April in a fight against organized prostitution around the District\u2019s Logan and Thomas circles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Judge Amit P. Mehta sentenced Armstead to 23 years in prison on the sex trafficking charge, and sentenced him to a concurrent 10-year prison term on the firearms charges. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/photo-by-clker-free-vector-images-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-50357\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-50357 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/40657-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/40657-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/40657-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/40657-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/40657-768x767.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/40657.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Following his prison term, Armstead will be placed on 20 years of supervised release.\u00a0 Armstead was also ordered to pay $28,644 in victim restitution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 A second defendant, Anthony Gray, pleaded guilty in January 2022 to one count of transportation of minors related to his activities with Armstead. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Gray, 39 of Cheverly, Maryland, was sentenced this week to 10 years in prison for his role in the crimes. He was also sentenced to 10 years of supervised release following his prison term and ordered to pay $15,000 in victim restitution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 According to evidence presented at trial, from March 2015 until September 2019, in Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia, and elsewhere, Armstead trafficked several young women for commercial sex, including one who was only 16 years old. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">He was found guilty of a charge involving an adult woman. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-50053 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/1yeql23dvji-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"brown wooden chairs inside room\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/1yeql23dvji-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/1yeql23dvji-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/1yeql23dvji-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/1yeql23dvji.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>He used social media to lure this victim across the country based on false promises of fantastic success and financial comfort and security. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Instead, after three months of being forced to work in Armstead\u2019s commercial sex enterprise for his profit, she left the Washington, D.C. area with nothing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Armstead operated his enterprise by recruiting young women as commercial sex workers, then advertising them in online forums (like Backpage.com), having them work in strip clubs to meet \u201ccustomers,\u201d and coercing them to engage in commercial sex on \u201cthe blade,\u201d the track in downtown Washington, D.C. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Armstead promoted himself on social media, purporting to live a life of luxury with the money he took from the women in his commercial sex enterprise. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">He controlled and manipulated the victims, including by threats of force; brandishing various weapons, including large automatic weapons; taking and controlling all the proceeds from their commercial sex work; limiting their contact with friends and family, such as smashing a cellphone; and by controlling their access to transportation and even their own identification documents, officials stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 During the course of the investigation into Armstead\u2019s activities, law enforcement determined that Gray joined Armstead in bringing victims to hotels in Alexandria, Virginia and Lusby, Maryland in March 2015, for the purpose of engaging in commercial sex. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">On one of these occasions, Gray took pictures of two of the victims and then posted these pictures as advertisements online, offering them for commercial sex. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Gray determined who the clients could be and the prices that could be charged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Second Defendant Sentenced to 10 Years for His Role in the Crimes \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 WASHINGTON D.C.
