{"id":50531,"date":"2022-08-04T20:51:45","date_gmt":"2022-08-05T03:51:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=50531"},"modified":"2022-08-04T20:51:45","modified_gmt":"2022-08-05T03:51:45","slug":"man-sentenced-to-25-years-in-prison-for-viciously-attacking-an-asian-family-including-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=50531","title":{"rendered":"Man Sentenced to 25 Years in Prison for Viciously Attacking an Asian Family, Including Children"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"field field--name-field-pr-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item even\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">TEXAS<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u00a0Jose Gomez III, 21, of Midland, Texas, was sentenced to 25 years in prison on hate crime charges for attacking an Asian family he believed was Chinese and therefore responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic, officials Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">Gomez plead guilty to three counts of committing a hate crime.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Wj7Q0sCJUf4\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">According to the facts admitted in the plea, on March 14, 2020, Gomez entered a Sam\u2019s Club Warehouse in Midland, Texas, behind an Asian family with young children.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-pr-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item even\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">Gomez had never seen them before and believed they were Chinese. Gomez followed them in the store for several minutes because he perceived them to be a \u201cthreat\u201d as they were \u201cfrom the country who started spreading that disease around.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-49809 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/40657-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/40657-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/40657-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/40657-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/40657-768x767.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/40657.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Gomez then momentarily left the family to find a serrated steak knife in the store. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">Gomez bent the blade so that when he held the handle in his fist, the blade rested against his knuckles, sharp edge facing outward. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">Gomez returned to the Asian family and punched the father, B.C., in the face, cutting him. Gomez then left to retrieve an eight-inch knife from the store. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">When Gomez returned to B.C., Gomez abruptly turned towards B.C.\u2019s two young children \u2013 then aged six and two years old \u2013 who were seated in the front basket of the shopping cart. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">Gomez slashed open the face of R.C., the then-six-year-old child.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-pr-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item even\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">The blade entered millimeters from R.C.\u2019s right eye, split his right ear, and wrapped around to the back of his skull.\u00a0 Gomez also stabbed a white Sam\u2019s Club employee, Z.O., who intervened to stop Gomez from further assaulting the Asian family. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">While being held down on the ground, Gomez yelled at the Asian family, \u201cGet out of America!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">Gomez admitted he believed the Asian family was Chinese and that he blamed them for the COVID-19 pandemic. Gomez further admitted he had attempted to kill the six-year-old child. Gomez also admitted he had attacked Z.O., the store employee, because Gomez wanted to kill the six-year-old child and Z.O. was preventing him from doing so.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u201cPandemic-driven and racially-motivated acts of violence are deplorable crimes, and the Justice Department stands ready to use our hate crimes laws to hold perpetrators accountable,\u201d said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke for the Justice Department\u2019s Civil Rights Division.\u201cHate crimes targeting Asian Americans have spiked during the pandemic and must be confronted. All people deserve to feel safe and secure living in their communities, regardless of race, color or national origin.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Nix952yEmy4\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"field__item even\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">&#8220;Mr. Gomez&#8217;s cowardly and racially motivated actions do not represent our West Texas community,\u201d said Special Agent in Charge Jeffery R. Downey of the FBI El Paso Field Office. \u201cIt is our hope today&#8217;s sentence will help the victims with the healing process. Rest assured, the FBI and our law enforcement partners will aggressively pursue anyone who commits these violent acts to ensure the civil rights of all Americans are protected.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">The case was investigated by the Midland Police Department and the FBI. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Brandi Young for the Western District of Texas and Trial Attorney Angie Cha of the Civil Rights Division\u2019s
