{"id":506,"date":"2014-02-06T05:24:54","date_gmt":"2014-02-06T13:24:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=506"},"modified":"2014-02-13T15:13:04","modified_gmt":"2014-02-13T23:13:04","slug":"two-mexicans-found-guilty-murder-death-coast-guard-officer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=506","title":{"rendered":"Two Mexicans Found Guilty of Murder in the Death of Coast Guard Officer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>LOS ANGELES\u00a0<\/strong>&#8212; \u00a0A federal jury on Wednesday found two Mexican nationals \u00a0guilty of the murder of a Coast Guard officer who died on 2012 when he was thrown from his vessel that was rammed by a \u201cpanga\u201d boat operated by defendants, federal official said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The second-degree murder verdicts came after a seven-day trial.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Petty Officer <strong>Terrell Horne III,<\/strong> died while his boat was attempting to interdict the panga boat near Santa Cruz Island in the Channel Islands National Park, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>The two men, both from Ensenada, found guilty today are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Jose Meija-Leyva,<\/strong> 42, who was found guilty of murder, as well as two counts of failure to heave to and four counts of assaulting federal officers with a deadly and dangerous weapon; and<\/li>\n<li><strong>Manuel Beltran-Higuera,<\/strong> 44, who also was convicted in the two counts of failure to heave to (as an accessory after the fact in one count and as an aider and abettor in the second count) and in the four counts of assault (as an accessory after the fact).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When he is sentenced, \u00a0federal officials said Meija-Leyva faces life in federal prison. At sentencing, Beltran-Higuera \u00a0is facing 60 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are pleased with the verdict and that those responsible for Senior Chief Horne\u2019s death will be held accountable,\u201d said Admiral Robert J. Papp, Jr., Commandant of the Coast Guard. \u201cWhile the conviction of Senior Chief Horne\u2019s killers cannot make up for the loss of a family member, friend and shipmate, we do hope that the conclusion of this case provides some level of comfort and closure to his loved ones. The Coast Guard will continue to honor the legacy Senior Chief Horne and his selfless service to our nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0Horne was struck by a propeller in the head and sustained a fatal injury. The other officer sustained a laceration to his knee. \u00a0<\/span>After striking the Coast Guard\u2019s small boat, the panga boat crew fled the scene.<\/p>\n<p>Coast Guard aircraft followed the panga boat until it was intercepted by a Coast Guard vessel about four hours later approximately 20 miles north of the Mexico-United States border.<\/p>\n<p>Meija and Beltran were arrested at that
