Scarsi sentenced Scott Quinn Berkett, 25.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6663598923MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u00a0Berkett pleaded guilty on June 13 to one count of use of interstate facilities to commit murder-for-hire. He has been in federal custody since his arrest in this case in May 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6663598923MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-50788 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/bd7gnnwjbku-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"MacBook Pro turned on\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/bd7gnnwjbku-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/bd7gnnwjbku-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/bd7gnnwjbku-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/bd7gnnwjbku.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/>According to the affidavit in support of a criminal complaint in this case, Berkett met the victim online in 2020, and the woman flew to Los Angeles to meet Berkett in late October 2020. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6663598923MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">The victim, who described Berkett\u2019s behavior as \u201csexually aggressive,\u201d tried on several occasions to break off the relationship following the October trip, the affidavit states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6663598923MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In April 2021, a family member, who had learned that Berkett continued to contact the victim, called and sent text messages to Berkett\u2019s father\u2019s phone, officials stated<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6663598923MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">On April 20, Berkett appeared to have responded saying, \u201cConsider this matter closed,\u201d officials stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6663598923MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Soon afterward, in April 2021, he solicited and paid for murder-for-hire services via a website on the darknet for a group that purportedly offered such services. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6663598923MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/photo-by-sik-life\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-50810\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-50810 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/2821433-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/2821433-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/2821433-682x1024.jpg 682w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/2821433-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/2821433.jpg 853w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>Berkett provided the darknet group with specific directions and details about his victim. As payment for the victim\u2019s murder, Berkett sent the darknet group bitcoin payments totaling approximately $13,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6663598923MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In May 2021, an undercover law enforcement officer, posing as a hitman from the darknet group, contacted Berkett.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6663598923MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"> The undercover officer sent Berkett pictures of the victim. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6663598923MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">Berkett confirmed that the pictures showed his intended victim and that he had made bitcoin payments to obtain her murder. Berkett further requested proof of her murder and made an additional $1,000 payment to the undercover officer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6663598923MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201c[Berkett\u2019s] crime was not a momentary lapse in judgment, but a premeditated plot to kill the victim because she rejected his advances,\u201d prosecutors argued in a sentencing memorandum. \u201cWhile attempting to take a life is atrocious enough, [Berkett\u2019s] chosen method of carrying out the crime \u2013 using the Dark Web to hire a hitman and cryptocurrency \u2013 speak to his sophistication, meticulous planning, and attempts to anonymize his illegal conduct in the commission of this offense, and are <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">aggravating in nature.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6663598923MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The FBI investigated this matter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6663598923MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Assistant United States Attorney Kathy Yu of the Violent and Organized Crime Section prosecuted this case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6663598923MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0LOS ANGELES\u00a0 A Beverly Hills man was sentenced Monday to five years in federal prison for attempting to hire a hitman to kill a woman he briefly dated, according to officials.
