and alien trafficking charges after law enforcement caught them on a panga boat containing 45 pounds of methamphetamine and 11 undocumented non-citizens from Mexico on a Santa Barbara County beach, the Justice Department announced Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8868698609MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Jorge Mu\u00f1oz-Mu\u00f1oz, 26, of Ensenada, Mexico, and Roel Aranzubia-\u00c1lvarez, 43, of Sinaloa, Mexico, were found guilty on Tuesday of one count of conspiracy to bring non-citizens into the United States, 11 counts of alien smuggling, 11 counts of alien smuggling for private financial gain, and one count of aiding and assisting an alien convicted of an aggravated felony to enter the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8868698609MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">Aranzubia-\u00c1lvarez was found not guilty of the drug-related charges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8868698609MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 According to evidence presented at their five-day trial, on the morning of September 27, 2021, law enforcement sighted a panga boat adrift off the coast of Santa Barbara County.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8868698609MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"> The vessel, which was having engine trouble, ultimately made landfall at Arroyo Quemada Beach, approximately 25 miles west of Santa Barbara.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8868698609MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3918 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Department-of-Justice-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" there were 15 people on the boat, including several crewmembers, and that Aranzubia-\u00c1lvarez was the boat\u2019s captain. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8868698609MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">Two black bags containing 40 vacuum-sealed and plastic-wrapped bindles, totaling approximately 45 pounds, were thrown off the boat by passengers at Mu\u00f1oz-Mu\u00f1oz\u2019s direction and later recovered by law enforcement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8868698609MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Law enforcement also later confirmed that all boat occupants were undocumented non-citizens. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8868698609MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">Based on interviews with the passengers, it was determined that they arrived at a beach in Ensenada, Mexico, to board a panga that would smuggle them into the United States for approximately $15,000 each.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8868698609MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Both defendants have been in federal custody since their arrest in September 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8868698609MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 U.S. District Judge Dale S. Fischer scheduled an April 10 sentencing hearing. At that time, Mu\u00f1oz-Mu\u00f1oz faces up to life in federal prison. Aranzubia-\u00c1lvarez will face a statutory maximum sentence of 15 years in federal prison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8868698609MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Homeland Security Investigations investigated this matter. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8868698609MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff\u2019s Office, and the California Department of Parks and Recreation provided substantial assistance.<b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8868698609MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Assistant United States Attorney Haoxiaohan Cai and Justice Department Trial Attorney Siobhan M.
