(YPI), a Hollywood-based nonprofit agency<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8528870457MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">The agency worked to eradicate poverty in some of the highest-needs neighborhoods in Los Angeles, officials stated. It<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"> used a comprehensive approach addressing education, youth development, safety, job training, and health and wellness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8528870457MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RmIj2KKaHYE\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>(2015 \u2014 Highlights from Dixon Slingerland&#8217;s presentation at the USC Sol Price Center for Social Innovation)<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8528870457MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">In these roles, Slingerland had check-signing authority over YPI\u2019s bank accounts and was the personal guarantor of YPI\u2019s credit card.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8528870457MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">From January 2015 to February 2019, Slingerland caused at least $71,533 of YPI funds to be spent on unauthorized expenditures, including Slingerland\u2019s personal property tax bill that exceeded $14,000, more than $6,000 for a family dinner at a New York City restaurant, nearly $11,000 for a family member\u2019s tutoring, and nearly $2,000 on a home computer and software.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8528870457MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">In July 2019, Slingerland caused about $401,561 in funds YPI had received from a federal grant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8528870457MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5906 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/U.S.-Department-of-Justice.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"396\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/U.S.-Department-of-Justice.jpg 200w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/U.S.-Department-of-Justice-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 396px) 100vw, 396px\" \/>That same month, he also caused approximately $201,466 in federal grant money to be illegally used to pay off YPI\u2019s credit card bill, including for expenses Slingerland had incurred.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8528870457MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">Slingerland further admitted in his plea agreement that he underreported on his federal income tax returns more than $100,000 in income each year for the tax years 2015 through 2018 by not reporting money he obtained from YPI, including through the embezzlement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8528870457MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">Slingerland admitted to owing the U.S. Treasury a total of approximately $147,398 in unpaid taxes \u2013 not including penalties and interest \u2013 for these years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8528870457MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Slingerland is facing up to 10 years in federal prison on the conversion count and three years in federal prison on the tax count.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8528870457MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Assistant U.S. Attorney Ranee A.
