A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/how-we-can-help-you\/safety-resources\/scams-and-safety\/common-scams-and-crimes\/money-mules\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">money mule<\/a>\u00a0is someone who transfers or moves illegally acquired money on behalf of someone else.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8426707961MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Despite the warning, Lieu allegedly continued trafficking fraud proceeds.\u00a0Between July 2019 and April 2021, Lieu allegedly received more than $1.8 million into various bank accounts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8426707961MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">These funds came directly from fraud victims deceived into sending the funds to Lieu-controlled bank accounts, rather than to the victims\u2019 intended recipients, court documents state. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8426707961MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">After receiving this money, Lieu allegedly quickly withdrew or transferred it to various individuals or entities, including by converting the funds into cryptocurrency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8426707961MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The indictment specifically alleges that Lieu transferred more than $560,000 from bank accounts she controlled to accounts at different banks and to Coinbase, a cryptocurrency exchange platform, from July 2020 to February 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8426707961MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<i><\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u00a0 If convicted on all counts, Lieu faces up to 20 years in federal prison for each money laundering count and up to 10 years for each illegal monetary transactions count.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8426707961MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The FBI and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General investigated this matter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8426707961MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Assistant U.S.Attorneys Carolyn S.
