font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Deshawn Ricks, 33, was arrested Wednesday and is charged in a federal criminal complaint with carjacking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv5717108613MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 According to an affidavit filed with the complaint, on the afternoon of June 14, Fullerton Police officers were dispatched to the scene of a carjacking in a parking structure in downtown Fullerton. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv5717108613MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The victim told officers she was sitting in her parked 2022 Mazda CX-5 SUV with the vehicle turned off when Ricks approached her, opened her car\u2019s door and ordered her out of the SUV, the affidavit states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv5717108613MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 When the victim refused, Ricks allegedly placed one of his hands on her lower back and brandished a metal object \u2013 which the victim described as a \u201cshank\u201d \u2013 in his other hand. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv5717108613MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3918 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Department-of-Justice-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Department-of-Justice-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Department-of-Justice-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Department-of-Justice.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Ricks allegedly threatened to stab the victim, then pulled her out of the vehicle by her hair and body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv5717108613MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ricks then got into the vehicle and while he attempted to get it to start \u2013 the SUV had a \u201cpush to start\u201d feature \u2013 the victim reached into the vehicle, grabbed her purse and then walked away to get help, the affidavit alleges. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv5717108613MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Ricks allegedly then drove the car within five feet of the victim and left the area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv5717108613MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Approximately 10 minutes after being notified of the carjacking, Fullerton Police officers located Ricks driving the victim\u2019s stolen SUV, according to the affidavit. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv5717108613MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-637 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/criminal-justice-degree-3-300x218.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/criminal-justice-degree-3-300x218.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/criminal-justice-degree-3-278x202.jpg 278w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/criminal-justice-degree-3-373x270.jpg 373w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/criminal-justice-degree-3.jpg 482w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Despite officers\u2019 attempts to make a traffic stop, Ricks allegedly led police on a high-speed pursuit in Fullerton in which he ran red lights, drove into oncoming traffic, and hit a marked police vehicle. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv5717108613MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Later during the chase, when Ricks lost control of the speeding Mazda that then was struck by a police vehicle, he exited the SUV and fled on foot before officers apprehended him, the affidavit states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv5717108613MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 After law enforcement stopped the vehicle, officers allegedly found a pointed, serrated metal stake-type object \u2013 approximately 12 inches long \u2013 near the front driver\u2019s seat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv5717108613MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<i><\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Ricks would face a statutory maximum sentence of 15 years in federal prison if convicted.
