{"id":53515,"date":"2023-07-08T12:02:57","date_gmt":"2023-07-08T19:02:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=53515"},"modified":"2023-07-08T12:03:18","modified_gmt":"2023-07-08T19:03:18","slug":"southern-california-edison-and-two-other-companies-pay-22-million-to-settle-32000-acre-fire-claim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=53515","title":{"rendered":"Southern California Edison and Two Other Companies Pay $22 Million to Settle 32,000 Acre Fire Claim"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"yiv6274464097MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>LOS ANGELES\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6274464097MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Southern California Edison (SCE); Utility Tree Service LLC (UTS); and Frontier Communications Holdings LLC paid $22 million to resolve claims on behalf of the U.S. Forest Service; officials announced this week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6274464097MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">According to the Justice Department, the settlement was paid to recoup costs and damages associated with a 2016 wildfire in the Los Padres National Forest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6274464097MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The Rey Fire ignited on August 18, 2016, when a tree fell onto powerlines and communication lines owned, respectively, by SCE and Frontier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rey Fire leads to increase campfire restrictions\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uP_Qej5S5dA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>(KEYT Report Six Years ago)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6274464097MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">In 2019, the federal government filed a lawsuit on behalf of the Forest Service against SCE and Frontier \u2014 as well as UTS, which was SCE\u2019s vegetation management contractor \u2014 to recover costs for the extensive damages that the Rey Fire caused.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6274464097MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The federal government alleged that the impact of the tree on Frontier\u2019s and SCE\u2019s lines caused a malfunction of SCE\u2019s power equipment farther down the power lines and caused an energized power line to fall to the ground. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6274464097MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The energized power line ignited adjacent dry vegetation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6274464097MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The Rey Fire burned over 32,000 acres, including 19,000 acres of National Forest System lands in Santa Barbara County, officials stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6274464097MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cThis settlement will compensate the public for the expense of fighting the Rey Fire and restoring these federal lands that are enjoyed by all Americans,\u201d First Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph T. McNally said. \u201cThe U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office will continue to aggressively pursue recovery against those who cause damages to our precious national resources.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6274464097MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">SCE, UTS, and Frontier agreed to pay the settlement without admitting wrongdoing or fault.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6274464097MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Assistant U.S. Attorneys Matthew Barragan and Margaret Chen of the Complex and Defensive Litigation Section handled this case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6274464097MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LOS ANGELES\u00a0 Southern California Edison (SCE);
