center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Dr. Ron Elfenbein fraudulently billed Medicare and Insurance companies for patients who received COVID-19 tests at his testing sites.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">According to the evidence during trial,\u00a0 Elfenbein, 49, of Arnold, was an owner and the medical director of Drs ERgent Care LLC, dba First Call Medical Center and Chesapeake ERgent Care. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12931 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/fraud-medicare-card-cube-e1499997089362-300x278.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/fraud-medicare-card-cube-e1499997089362-300x278.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/fraud-medicare-card-cube-e1499997089362.jpg 417w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Drs ERgent Care operated multiple drive-through COVID-19 testing sites in Anne Arundel and Prince George\u2019s counties. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Elfenbein instructed the employees of Drs ERgent Care that, in addition to billing for COVID-19 tests, the employees were to bill for high-level evaluation and management visits. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">In reality, these visits were not provided to patients as represented. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Rather, Elfenbein instructed his employees that the patients were \u201cthere for one reason only \u2013 to be tested,\u201d that it was \u201csimple and straightforward,\u201d and that the providers were \u201cnot there to solve complex medical issues.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" patients, including those who were asymptomatic, getting tested for COVID-19 for their employment requirements, and being tested for COVID-19 so that they could travel. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Through Drs ERgent Care, Elfenbein caused the submission of millions of dollars in claims to Medicare and a commercial insurer for tens of thousands of high-level visits that were not provided as represented and were ineligible for reimbursement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-53513 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/ujpmmc5z1pg-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"tufted black chairs 100vw, 225px\" \/>The jury convicted Elfenbein of five counts of healthcare fraud. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">He is scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 7 and faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison on each of the five counts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Elfenbein is the first doctor convicted at trial by the Justice Department for healthcare fraud in billing for office visits in connection with patients seeking COVID-19 tests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\"
