Sechriest admitted that he targeted the synagogue because of his hatred of Jews, and journals recovered from the defendant were replete with virulent antisemitic statements and views. Sechriest also possessed several decals and stickers expressing antisemitic messages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Texas State student accused of setting fire to Austin synagogue arrested\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HLmw_RdlpK4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>(News Report Two Years Ago)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cThis defendant is being held accountable for this depraved, antisemitic attack on Congregation Beth Israel, a community with a rich history and heritage that dates back to 1876,\u201d said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department\u2019s Civil Rights Division. \u201cThis hate-filled act of violence against a house of worship was an attempt to sow fear in the Jewish community and was intended to intimidate its congregants. \u00a0Attacks targeting Jewish people and arsons aimed at desecrating synagogues have no place in our society today, and the Justice Department will continue to aggressively prosecute antisemitic violence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_54855\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54855\" style=\"width: 368px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-54855\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/download-60.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"206\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-54855\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Franklin Sechriest<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">According to court documents, on Oct. 28, 2021, three days before the arson, Sechriest drove to the synagogue\u2019s parking lot outside its sanctuary. Sechriest\u2019s journals indicate that he went there to \u201cscout out a target.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The night of the arson, Sechriest drove to the synagogue and was seen on surveillance video carrying a five-gallon container and toilet paper toward the synagogue\u2019s sanctuary. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Moments later, multiple surveillance videos captured the glow of a fire from the direction of the sanctuary. A security camera captured Sechriest jogging away from the direction of the fire and toward the open driver\u2019s side door of a vehicle. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1611 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/FBI-Logo-300x209.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/FBI-Logo-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/FBI-Logo.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>A concerned citizen reported the fire, and the Austin Fire Department responded quickly to extinguish it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">In Sechriest\u2019s journal, in an entry dated Oct. 31, 2021, he wrote \u201cI set a synagogue on fire.\u201d In the days following the arson, Sechriest\u2019s journal noted that he was actively monitoring media reports to track the progress of the investigation into the arson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cNo one should have to fear that their daily lives will be inflicted by hate-fueled violence, or that their place of worship and community could become a target of hate,\u201d said U.S. Attorney Jaime Esparza for the Western District of Texas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cHate crimes have the power to devastate and terrorize entire communities. To target a place of worship, a space meant to be a sanctuary in every sense of the word, is one of the most heinous acts that can be committed,\u201d said Acting Special Agent in Charge Doug Olson of the FBI San Antonio Field Office.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The FBI San Antonio Field Office and Austin Fire Department investigated the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:
