LOS ANGELES<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"Jarris Silagi has been charged with violently attacking a Jewish couple as they were on their way to celebrate Shabbat at their synagogue in Beverly Hills.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI unequivocally condemn the violent attack inflicted upon those peacefully observing their faith.\u201d District Attorney George Gasc\u00f3n said. \u201cSuch acts of antisemitism have no place in our community, and we continue to be committed to ensuring justice prevails and holding the defendant accountable. Our thoughts are with the victims and all those who continue to be targeted for their faith. My office\u2019s Hate Crimes Unit will work diligently to bring justice to the victims.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Jarris Jay Silagi, 44,\u00a0 is charged with one count of attempted second-degree robbery; one count of elder or dependent adult abuse, infliction of injury; one count of assault with a deadly weapon; and two counts of assault using force likely to produce great bodily harm.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is further alleged that Silagi caused great bodily injury during the commission of the crime.<\/span><\/p>\n

Silagi was arraigned today in Dept. 30 at the Airport Courthouse.<\/span><\/p>\n

On December 9, a 75-year-old man and his wife walked to a Beverly Hills synagogue while observing Shabbat during the Hannukah holiday. <\/span><\/p>\n

Silagi allegedly ran toward them, striking the man, who was wearing a yarmulke, once on his head with a belt, causing injury.<\/span><\/p>\n

Silagi also attempted to rob the female victim.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The incident was captured on video. <\/span>The prosecution recommends that Silagi be held on a $1.3 million bail.\u00a0 Silagi is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.<\/span><\/p>\n

If convicted as charged, Silagi faces up to life in prison.<\/span><\/p>\n
