Fischer sentenced to Jorge Muoz-Muoz, 27, of Ensenada, Mexico.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv4675623639MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">After a five-day trial in December 2022, a federal jury found Mu\u00f1oz-Mu\u00f1oz guilty of one count of conspiracy to bring aliens into the United States, 11 counts of alien smuggling, 11 counts of alien smuggling for private financial gain, one count of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, one count of conspiracy to import methamphetamine, and one count of importation of methamphetamine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Smuggling boat stopped off Santa Barbara County coast\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-ZlAkYz_DzU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv4675623639MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">On the morning of September 27, 2021, law enforcement sighted a panga boat adrift off the coast of Santa Barbara County.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv4675623639MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"> The vessel, which was having engine trouble, ultimately landed at Arroyo Quemada Beach, approximately 25 miles west of Santa Barbara.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv4675623639MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5414 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/U.S.-Department-of-Homeland-Security-300x184.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"347\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/U.S.-Department-of-Homeland-Security-300x184.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/U.S.-Department-of-Homeland-Security.jpg 584w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 347px) 100vw, 347px\" \/>The investigation into this matter indicated that were 15 people on the boat, including several crew members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv4675623639MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">On Muoz-Muoz&#8217;s orders, passengers threw two black bags containing 40 vacuum-sealed and plastic-wrapped bindles off the boat, which law enforcement later found.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv4675623639MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Authorities also later confirmed that all the occupants of the boat were undocumented aliens. Based on interviews with the passengers, it was determined that they arrived at a beach in Ensenada, Mexico, to board a panga that would smuggle them into the United States for approximately $15,000 each.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv4675623639MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">On July 6, Judge Fischer ordered Mu\u00f1oz-Mu\u00f1oz acquitted of one count of aiding and assisting an alien convicted of an aggravated felony to enter the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv4675623639MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2811 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Homeland-Security-Investigations-Badge.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"283\" \/>Mu\u00f1oz-Mu\u00f1oz has been in federal custody since his arrest in September 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv4675623639MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Roel Aranzubia-\u00c1lvarez, 45, of Sinaloa, Mexico, the panga boat\u2019s captain, was convicted at trial with Mu\u00f1oz-Mu\u00f1oz of alien smuggling charges in this case and was sentenced to five years in federal prison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv4675623639MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Another defendant and panga boat crewmember, Ca\u00edn Camargo-L\u00f3pez, 46, of Sinaloa, Mexico, pleaded guilty in April 2022 to two counts of alien smuggling and one count of conspiring to allow an alien convicted of aggravated felonies to enter the United States. On August 7, Judge Fischer sentenced Camargo-L\u00f3pez to five years in federal prison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv4675623639MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Homeland Security Investigations investigated this matter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv4675623639MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Assistant United States Attorney Haoxiaohan Cai of the General Crimes Section and Justice Department Trial Attorney Siobhan M.
