Bernal sentenced Samuel Sven Smith, 28, of Phoenix.\u00a0 The judge also required him to pay $8,873 in restitution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Man charged with robbing 10 stores in L.A. area, Arizona\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1bdVe4k2Gpo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1388554782MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">In May 2023, Smith pleaded guilty to two counts of interference with commerce by robbery (Hobbs Act) and two counts of brandishing and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1388554782MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">From July 31, 2022, until his arrest on August 20, 2022, Smith went on an armed robbery spree in Los Angeles, Orange, and San Bernardino counties, as well as in Arizona. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1388554782MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1867 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/ATF-BADGE-217x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"217\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/ATF-BADGE-217x300.png 217w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/ATF-BADGE.png 429w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/>Specifically, Smith admitted robbing a Big Lots store in Riverside and PetSmart stores in Signal Hill, Orange, San Bernardino, Fontana, Pico Rivera, Redlands, Phoenix, and Rancho Cucamonga.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1388554782MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">In each of these nine robberies, Smith brandished a firearm to control store employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1388554782MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">&#8220;Smith showed complete disregard for the safety of others when he went on his crime spree, threatening store employee with firearms and then opening fire on federal agents,\u201d said U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada. \u201cWe cannot accept such blatant violence on our streets, and my office is committed to doing all it can to protect the people of our district.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1388554782MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">On August 20, 2022, Smith robbed the Rancho Cucamonga PetSmart store and stole $400 from a store employee. As he was leaving the store, federal officers met him. Smith then opened fire at the officers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1388554782MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Smith then entered his vehicle and sped off, leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase, during which he fired his gun numerous times at pursuing officers. The chase ended when law enforcement rammed into Smith\u2019s vehicle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1388554782MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3918 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Department-of-Justice-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Department-of-Justice-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Department-of-Justice-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Department-of-Justice.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>According to court documents, when law enforcement approached Smith\u2019s car, they determined he had suffered a gunshot wound underneath his chin. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1388554782MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Smith told officers who were performing life-saving measures that when they rammed into his vehicle, he accidentally shot himself, according to an affidavit filed with a criminal complaint in this case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1388554782MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">&#8220;This is the type of vicious career criminal that ATF\u2019s task force in Orange County targets daily,\u201d said the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Los Angeles Field Division Special Agent in Charge Christopher Bombardiere. \u201cWe work with our law enforcement partners to put these offenders in prison to stop their terrorizing of our communities. I want to thank all the men and women on the task force who risk their lives daily.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1388554782MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The ATF Orange County Violent Crime Task Force investigated this matter. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1388554782MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The task force, which is responsible for investigating serial robberies around Southern California, is composed of investigators with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF); the Brea Police Department; the Fullerton Police Department; the Santa Ana Police Department; and the Orange County District Attorney\u2019s Office. The San Bernardino County Sheriff\u2019s Department provided assistance in this matter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1388554782MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin J.
