{"id":5557,"date":"2014-08-13T20:28:19","date_gmt":"2014-08-14T03:28:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=5557"},"modified":"2014-08-13T20:28:19","modified_gmt":"2014-08-14T03:28:19","slug":"law-professor-never-talk-police-officers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=5557","title":{"rendered":"Law Professor:  Never Talk to Police Officers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/organizations-file-separate-civil-rights-lawsuits-two-states\/civil_rights_banner\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1120\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1120\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Civil_Rights_Banner-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Civil_Rights_Banner\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>BY RAUL HERNANDEZ<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>NotebookVentura@Yahoo.com<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A few years ago, I was fortunate to get a fellowship to Loyola\u2019s Journalism Law School in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>In one of the training sessions, Maureen Pacheco, an associate professor of law with the Center for Juvenile Law and Policy, said the center\u2019s lawyers hand out these cards to juvenile clients in case they are arrested by the police or questioned by prosecutors.<\/p>\n<p>The card states:\u00a0 \u201cPlease Call My Lawyer Immediately\u201d and instructs the person who the card is given to call the lawyer whose name and phone number appears on the card.<\/p>\n<p>It cites California law, and states: \u201cUnder the Fifth and Sixth Amendments, I am invoking my right not to talk to anyone about any criminal matter without my attorney present.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not wish to answer questions without speaking to my attorney first.\u00a0 I will not consent to any search or submit to any test until I have spoken to my attorney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t understand the complexity and importance of these statements, and how it applies to the guilty along with the innocent until I saw a video, which is nearly 50 minutes long, by a law professor who was also a former criminal defense lawyer.<\/p>\n<p>The video is titled:\u00a0 \u201cWhy I am Proud to Admit That I Will Never Talk to Any Police Officer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is eye-opening stuff and extremely educational.
