Clark, 40, of Falmouth, sent a message via the Arizona Secretary of State\u2019s website through \u201cContact Elections,\u201d addressing the election official by her first name and warning her that she needed to \u201cresign by Tuesday February 16th by 9 am or the explosive device impacted in her personal space will be detonated.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Shortly after transmitting the message, Clark conducted online searches that included the full name of the election official in conjunction with the words \u201chow to kill\u201d and \u201caddress.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Additionally, on or about Feb. 18, 2021, Clark conducted online searches involving the Boston Marathon bombing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Massachusetts Man Pleads Guilty to Threatening Arizona Election Official with Bomb\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sd2HTSz9rKI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cJames W. Clark sent a bomb threat to an Arizona election official. As a result, law enforcement searched the office building where the official worked, as well as the official\u2019s home and car, for an explosive device,\u201d said Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Nicole M. Argentieri, head of the Justice Department\u2019s Criminal Division. \u201cPublic servants who ensure our free and fair elections must be able to do their jobs without fear. The Criminal Division will continue to aggressively investigate and prosecute those who target election officials with threats of violence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">In response to Clark\u2019s message, law enforcement conducted partial evacuations and bomb sweeps of the building where the Arizona Secretary of State\u2019s Office was located, including an evacuation of the Office of the Arizona Governor&#8217;s floor in the same building. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Law enforcement also conducted bomb sweeps of the election official\u2019s personal residence and of the election official\u2019s car.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Clark\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/man-pleads-guilty-sending-bomb-threat-arizona-state-election-official\">pleaded guilty<\/a>\u00a0in August 2023 to one count of making a threatening interstate communication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Massachusetts man accused of making bomb threat to Arizona election official\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qC9AvE4YXck?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>(NEWS REPORT 2023)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The FBI Phoenix Field Office investigated the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Trial Attorney Tanya Senanayake of the National Security Division\u2019s Counterterrorism Section and Assistant U.S. Attorney Sean K.
