Hu and Shi were remanded into custody after the guilty verdicts against them were read in September 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8380988484MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cThese defendants were part of a sophisticated, transnational fraud operation that targeted mostly older adults to cheat them out of their savings,\u201d said U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada of the Central District of California. \u201cProtecting our most vulnerable community members is critically important, and we will hold accountable those who reach into our country to engage in these sorts of egregious fraud schemes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8380988484MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16417 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Veterans-Fraud-300x172.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"172\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Veterans-Fraud-300x172.png 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Veterans-Fraud.png 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The defendants were part of a network of individuals who laundered proceeds of fraud stored on Target gift cards. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8380988484MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Telephone scammers fraudulently induced victims across the country to buy gift cards, often $500 each, and to provide card numbers and access codes to the scammers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8380988484MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The scammers included government imposters falsely claiming to be police and other government personnel and retail and tech support impersonators falsely offering to fix nonexistent issues with the victims\u2019 online account or computer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8380988484MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The defendants acquired more than 5,000 gift card numbers and access codes from a group in the People\u2019s Republic of China calling itself the \u201cMagic Lamp\u201d and funneled the gift cards to \u201crunners\u201d to liquidate at Target stores in Southern California. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8380988484MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5414 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/U.S.-Department-of-Homeland-Security-300x184.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/U.S.-Department-of-Homeland-Security-300x184.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/U.S.-Department-of-Homeland-Security.jpg 584w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>At the defendants\u2019 direction, those runners would quickly use the cards to purchase high-value consumer electronics and conduct other transactions. The rapid transactions prevented victims from recouping the value of the cards when they contacted Target to report the scam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8380988484MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 At the conclusion of a 10-day trial in September 2023, a jury found the defendants guilty of a money laundering conspiracy from approximately June 2019 to November 2020. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8380988484MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The jury also found Bai guilty of a second money laundering conspiracy, in which he enlisted an associate to help sell a batch of gift cards with fraudulent proceeds after his initial arrest in the case. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8380988484MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">One of the defendants\u2019 main \u201crunners,\u201d Yan Fu, 61, of Chino Hills, pled guilty and was previously sentenced to 20 months in federal prison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8380988484MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Los Angeles Field Offices of Homeland Security Investigations and the FBI investigated the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8380988484MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Assistant U.S. Attorney Monica E.
