Cho called payments \u201cprotection fees,\u201d typically ranging from $100 to $1,000 monthly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1357660767MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cThis defendant carried out his shakedown operation for years by preying on an immigrant community and intimidating his victims into silence,\u201d said U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada. \u201cToday\u2019s verdict sends a message that we are focused on rooting out violent actors and holding them accountable for their actions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1357660767MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-55865\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/karaoke_1711504227.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-29089 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Los-Angeles-Police-Department-209x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"209\" height=\"300\" \/> For example, in May 2021, when one of Cho\u2019s victims \u2013 a doumi driver \u2013 refused to pay him more money, Cho and his accomplice beat the victim with baseball bats until knocking him unconscious and then stole his minivan. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1357660767MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The victim suffered a broken arm and multiple cuts and bruises. In response, the victim and his business partner closed their karaoke driving company, and the business partner left California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1357660767MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">During a separate incident in July 2022, a different victim was dropping two doumis off at a karaoke bar in Koreatown when Cho \u2013 who appeared to have something in his hoodie pocket \u2013 approached the victim\u2019s car, opened the door with his sleeve so as to not leave fingerprints, got halfway inside the vehicle, and told the victim that the victim\u2019s company was not permitted to drop off doumis. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1357660767MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">As the victim drove away, he heard gunshots, breaking the car\u2019s glass, which hit a doumi in the neck.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1357660767MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-52171 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/GavelcourtroomFeb92023-300x214.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/GavelcourtroomFeb92023-300x214.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/GavelcourtroomFeb92023-1024x731.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/GavelcourtroomFeb92023-768x548.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/GavelcourtroomFeb92023-1536x1097.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/GavelcourtroomFeb92023.jpeg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>In January 2023, Cho assaulted another karaoke driver who for years had paid him in cash and then via Venmo a monthly extortion fee. Cho began accepting electronic extortion payments during the COVID-19 pandemic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1357660767MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">When the victim stopped paying, Cho assaulted the victim, stole $1,000 from him, and threatened to kill him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1357660767MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u201cToday\u2019s verdict should send a strong message to those willing to use violence and threats of violence to intimidate Los Angeles communities,\u201d said HSI Special Agent in Charge Eddy Wang. \u201cHSI Los Angeles and our partners will not tolerate this egregious activity and will work diligently to ensure that dangers to society will be punished to the fullest extent of the law.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1357660767MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 U.S. District Judge Fernando L. Aenlle-Rocha scheduled an August 16 sentencing hearing.
