Wright II sentenced Steve Lee Dominguez, 58.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv2157314939MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"> Dominguez pleaded guilty in October 2023 to one count of bias-motivated interference with federally protected activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"LASD Investigating Hate Incident During &#039;Stop Asian Hate&#039; Rally In Diamond Bar\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jkIBw3Iv3Ws?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>(March 2021 News Report)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv2157314939MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u201cThis defendant\u2019s hateful attack was designed to curtail the rights of peaceful demonstrators,\u201d said U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada. \u201cWhile differences of opinion are part of a healthy democracy, we cannot allow people to commit acts of violence against those with whom they disagree. My office will continue to safeguard civil rights for all members of our community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv2157314939MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cMr. Dominguez attacked innocent civilians who were simply standing up for a righteous cause \u2013 to protect Asian members of our society from hateful attacks,\u201d said Mehtab Syed, the Acting Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI\u2019s Los Angeles Field Office. \u201cToday\u2019s sentence represents the FBI\u2019s commitment to ensuring that Constitutionally-protected rights are not violated and those who deny them will be held accountable.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv2157314939MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">A \u201cStop Asian Hate\u201d rally occurred in Diamond Bar on March 21, 2021. The rally was to raise awareness about the increase in hate crimes and hate incidents against members of the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community both locally and nationally \u2013 including the murders of six Asian American women five days earlier in Atlanta.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv2157314939MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">A group of rally participants assembled at the intersection of Diamond Bar Boulevard and Grand Avenue, carrying American flags and large signs supporting their cause. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv2157314939MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The demonstrators peacefully gathered and lawfully crossed the streets using the marked pedestrian crosswalk when they had the right of way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv2157314939MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">During the rally, Dominguez was driving a black Honda Civic sedan and was stopped at a red light at the intersection. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv2157314939MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Dominguez yelled, \u201cGo back to China!\u201d and other racial slurs and profanities at the demonstrators. He then deliberately drove his car through the intersection\u2019s crosswalk at the red light, made an illegal U-turn into oncoming traffic, and cut off the route of several rally participants lawfully crossing the street, primarily women and a young child.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv2157314939MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">One of the victims was an Asian woman carrying a sign that read, \u201cStop Asian Hate.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv2157314939MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Another victim was a minor black female rally participant who carried a sign that read, \u201cEnd the Violence Against Asians.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv2157314939MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Another person who was cut off in the crosswalk was a 9-year-old child, and Dominguez\u2019s car narrowly missed her and other victims. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv2157314939MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">No injuries were reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv2157314939MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Dominguez then pulled his car over, got out of the car, and continued to yell racial epithets, including the n-word and threats at the demonstrators. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv2157314939MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">He then called the police, identified himself as \u201cJohn Doe,\u201d and falsely reported to police that the rally participants were blocking the street and he had to run a red light \u201cbecause they were about to trample my car,\u201d according to evidence presented at trial. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv2157314939MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">He also requested that police \u201cget some control out\u201d at the intersection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv2157314939MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The FBI investigated this matter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv2157314939MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Assistant U.S. Attorneys Frances S. Lewis of the Public Corruption and Civil Rights Section and Suria M.
